  • Pete vs. Barry

This of course is based on the a$$-umption that Barry Bonds is guilty of steroid use. Pete gambled on baseball and in most stories only did it as a manager. Most facts point toward to the fact that he never bet against his team, but only on his team to win. How did this affect the game? If he bet on his ball club, he would do anything in his power to win the game, which includes not looking out for the clubs best interest in future games. There is no way that he managed his team the same on a game that he bet and on a game that he didn’t.

For example, if he were betting on his team on a particular night and they were losing by many points, he might start taking risks that he didn’t normally do to get runs. He might divert from his original game plan and use pitchers that were to start in the next couple of days. He might be losing by one point in a game that he is taking 3 points as a spread. If he wasn’t betting on his team, would he be taking the same risks or would he play it safe?

Verdict = detrimental to the game of baseball. Sentence = banned from baseball forever and no chance to be inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame.

Barry explains to the public that steroid use would not allow players to develop a better hand-eye coordination. Thus in turn would not make a person a better hitter just because he takes steroids. Of course, I beg to differ; steroids increase muscle mass, stamina, and your ability to recover from injury. With proper training, you can develop these traits without losing a lot of flexibility and quickness. This is why so many track and field athletes turn to steroids. If it was only about getting big and strong, then the sprinters, high jumpers, long jumpers etc. would not be taking steroids.

Back to hitting, anyone who played baseball understands that when you come up to the plate you can swing away for the fence or you can concentrate on putting the ball into play. In most cases when you swing for the fence, your percentage of getting a hit goes down. Just imagine if you were strong enough to hit line drives out of the ballpark and didn’t have to, “swing away” to get a home run. Of course, many will say that there are many athletes who did not take steroids that have a sweet swing and it would allow them to hit many homeruns and still command a decent batting average. In my opinion, Barry is one of these players. However, none of these types of players is hitting 50, 60, or 70 home runs on a year on a consistent basis.

Verdict = detrimental to the game of baseball. Sentence = none so far, mainly because he hasn’t been proven guilty yet. Just like OJ.

    Who negatively affected baseball more?
