Avonte Maddox had a terrific rookie season. He played in the slot, outside and even some FS. He was all over the place, helping the team wherever it needed him most. I can’t tell you how impressive that is for a rookie. So where will Maddox play this y

    Interesting.

Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby aren’t fully healthy yet so they aren’t practicing. Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones were the starting outside corners on Tuesday, with Maddox in the slot. Cre’Von LeBlanc, who was so good down the stretch last year, was the #2 slot.

It is easy to wonder why the team has Maddox in the slot after LeBlanc played at such a high level in December and January.

Cre'Von LeBlanc finished the season allowing just 1.02 yards per every snap in slot coverage – the 10th-best mark among CBs

The one thing you have to be careful about with a guy like LeBlanc is assuming what he did for a few games is now going to be his normal level of play. LeBlanc was not a great college player. He wasn’t a dynamic athlete. He wasn’t drafted. He was on the street when the Eagles signed him in the middle of 2018.

Patrick Robinson was great for the Eagles in 2017. He had been very up and down in his NFL career prior to that, but Robinson was a former first round pick. He had big time talent. Robinson had played at a high level in college and the NFL. He just hadn’t been able to sustain it. LeBlanc came out of nowhere.

We’ve seen plenty of players have a good stretch of games during a season and then never repeat that. Bobby Hoying had three games in 1998 where he looked like a legit starting QB. That turned out to be a major anomaly. Yikes.

LeBlanc might turn out to be a good player. The Eagles just aren’t putting all their eggs into that basket.

Maddox needs to be on the field in 2019. The only question is where. They are putting him in the slot because they think he can play at a high level in that spot. Not every corner can play inside. That is a tough position. Maddox and LeBlanc will battle it out to see who wins that job. Both players have experience there and both have played well there. This is a good thing, not a bad thing.

We don’t know what will happen with the outside corners. Darby is the most talented of the bunch. He will start once he’s healthy. The coaches love Mills, but they saw him get burned last year. He won’t be given anything. Douglas finished hot and he’s getting lots of work now. We’ll see how that goes.

Sidney Jones is the wild card. The kid is very talented, but we haven’t seen much of that in the NFL. If he can stay healthy and play up to his potential, he should win a starting job. Jones won’t be given anything. He’ll have to earn it.

With Alshon Jeffery out, Mack Hollins banged up and Mike Wallace in decline, the Eagles got a false read on their CBs last year during OTAs and camps. The receiving corps is deeper and more talented this year. The CBs are going to be challenged. Let’s hope that brings out the best in them.
