Top Ten Best Eagles Draft Picks (of the Reid Era) - #1 Donovan McNabb

When talking about the best picks of the Andy Reid era, frankly I don't know how it could be anyone else.

    Donovan McNabb - 1999 - First round

There's a few things that you can look at when grading one pick over another. You can look at value. If you picked two pro bowlers and one was a first round pick and one was a fifth round pick, then you got really amazing value for that fifth. You might look at a small school guy like Brian Westbrook and say that was a great pick because there were so many questions about whether he could face NFL competition.

But then you can look at position and degree of difficulty. Hands down, there is no harder pick to make than a franchise QB. McNabb's draft is maybe the best evidence of that. Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb & Akili Smith were the top three picks that year. Daunte Culpepper and Cade McNoun were taken a few picks later. One of those guys started for his team for a decade, made multiple pro bowls and even got his team to a Superbowl. One guy was Culpepper, who had a shortened, but mildly successful career and the others were complete and total busts.

There's nothing harder than picking a franchise QB. It's a career and franchise defining move and Andy Reid nailed the best pick of his career on his first try.

Can't argue with this! If Reid drafted Akili Smith, he probably wouldn't have lasted as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Or he would have surrounded him with better players and created better game plans bc Smith couldnt put a team on his back like McNabb.
