  • So glad we have Howie on our side

Andy Reid's decision to fire Jim Washburn was viewed as the Eagles coach owning up to his mistake in hiring the defensive line coach in the first place.

While Reid made the ultimate decision - he does have final say on all football matters - general manager Howie Roseman played an important role in the Eagles signing Washburn away from the Tennessee Titans in January 2011.

It was Roseman who first brought the idea to Reid's attention and then pushed for him to hire Washburn and bring his controversial wide-nine defensive scheme to the Eagles, two NFL sources said.

Roseman had admired Washburn's success with the Titans and was initially sold on the idea by Washburn's agent, Tony Agnone, who had a strong working relationship with the GM, according to one source.

The proposal was initially met with skepticism. Reid, though, became convinced. The Eagles coach had become less familiar with assistants around the league and which ones were available and had come to rely on others for suggestions, one source said.

Reid, as he would with any decision after he consulted those around him, could either reject Roseman's proposal or adopt it. He chose the latter - an indication of how much Roseman's influence within the organization had grown after just one year as GM.

When asked if the decision to hire Washburn was his and his alone, Reid said Monday that it was.

The Eagles later issued statements from Reid, Roseman and owner Jeffrey Lurie, who has not spoken publicly about the team this season, reiterating that Reid has final say on football matters.

"Andy Reid has full and final control over all decisions over his coaching staff," Roseman said in a statement. "To say that I had more to say, or more involvement or more input that Andy Reid in hiring Jim Washburn is categorically false."

Reid fired Washburn early Monday morning, a day after the 3-9 Eagles fell to the Dallas Cowboys, 38-33, for their eighth straight loss.

Reid said that he had been considering the move for some time. Washburn was a divisive figure within the Eagles coaching staff and had become disruptive and threatened to quit when defensive end Jason Babin was released last week.

"That didn't quite work the way I wanted it to work," Reid said of hiring Washburn.

Washburn's personality never meshed with Reid's. Looking back, it was a peculiar move, not only because Reid went outside his staff - he typically promoted from within - but because of the timing.

Reid fired Sean McDermott as defensive coordinator less than a week after the Eagles lost to the Packers in the 2011 playoffs. Reports surfaced less than a week after that that the Eagles were in talks with Washburn. Titans coach Jeff Fisher had been fired, and Washburn's contract was up.

The Eagles had to work fast because many teams wanted Washburn. Roseman initially contacted the coach about going to Philadelphia, and then he negotiated a reported three-year deal with Agnone.

(Agnone represents some of the top defensive linemen around the NFL, including Babin and Eagles defensive end Trent Cole. Babin followed Washburn from Tennessee and signed a five-year, $28 million contract with the Eagles in July 2011. Cole and the Eagles agreed to a four-year extension in March.)

Reid, meanwhile, continued to interview defensive coordinator candidates. Several either turned down offers or made it clear they weren't interested, presumably because they would have the wide nine forced upon them.

Reid then looked inward and made the controversial decision to promote Juan Castillo from offensive line coach to defensive coordinator. To make the switch possible, he needed a replacement for Castillo. Reid had always respected Howard Mudd and was able to lure him out of retirement.

The addition of Mudd was another indication that Reid was less familiar with the younger generation of promising assistants. When he became the Eagles' head coach in 1999, Reid had a list of assistants whom he wanted on his staff, and he went out and hired them.

But as many of his top assistants left for other jobs, Reid had less success finding their replacements. Rather than look outside, he often promoted from within, and the results were often unsatisfactory. (See: Rory Segrest, defensive line coach, 2009-10).

That's where Roseman came in. He had gotten to know or was familiar with many of the top young assistants from the college and pro ranks. Except the coach he had in mind to replace Segrest wasn't young or in the mold of Reid's typical hardworking, steadfast assistants.

In the end, the choice of Washburn was a disaster for all parties involved.

Where is this article from? ...The thing that I dont like about that article is 'Howies' statement. Guess he doesn't like his name circulated out there about possibly making a bad decision, no matter if it's true or false, so he had to make sure he put it out there that he had nothing to do with it. Ya know, as many bullets as Reid has taken for the organization, some he deserved, some he didn't, that seems like a pretty fuckin low thing to do. It's like their saying, hey Reid F'd that one up, not me.

Didn't like Howie anyway, and maybe I'm reading more into it, but that's straight up weak by the lawyer boy. If the allegations are false that he wanted Wash, just keep quiet. If you know it's not true, and your secure in your job, let the media talk and go about your business.....That's what Reid has done all these years, he let the media talk, true or false, let it go for the most part, and grinded away. Howie should take a lesson. Really not liking Howie at all!!

I had the same feeling when I read it. I guess that they just know that Andy is already a dead man walking, so Howie sees no need to go down with the ship. Perhaps Howie was the real weasel all along?

I wonder how the ferrot arrived on the scene anyway? I know the Weasel didn't hire him to replace himself. Is Jeffie getting "involved" again? Now that he's divorced, is he going to try to get "hands on" again?

Wow this posses Reid as a puppet to Howie. It also says how out of touch Reid was with the assitants in the NFL. Bad bad bad. BTW I don't have a problem with Howie being envolved in helping the coach pick the coaching staff. Ultimately though it was Reid choice so shame on him it didn't work out.

                    I strongly disagree!

I believe Howie is supremely qualified to do the thing that got him the GM job. And that is to shamelessly ingratiate himself to anyone in a position to advance him toward a career goal for which he was/is 'completely unqualified'.

Howie is a classic example of 'The Peter Principle' summarized as follows:

"The principle holds that in a hierarchal organization, members are promoted so long as they work competently. Eventually they are promoted to a position at which they are no longer competent (their "level of incompetence"), and there they remain, being unable to earn further promotions. Peter's Corollary states that "in time, every post tends to be occupied by an employee who is incompetent to carry out its duties"[2] and adds that "work is accomplished by those employees who have not yet reached their level of incompetence." "Managing upward" is the concept of a subordinate finding ways to subtly manipulate his or her superiors in order to prevent them from interfering with the subordinate's productive activity or to generally limit the damage done by the superiors incompetence."

Juan Castillo is another text book example of The Peter Principle. Juan worked very hard and was very good at what he did (Oline coach) and was rewarded by being promoted to the DC job where, predictably, he proved incompetent. Howie on the other hand worked very hard at his cap management job, while also using his intelligence to collect a lot of 'facts' about football and football players. He combined this factual knowledge (as opposed to experience) with finely honed brown nosing skills and was eventually rewarded with promotion the GM job where, predictably, he will give new and expanded meaning to the term 'cluster fuck'.

I screeched for years about Joe Banner and Howie getting involved in personnel and it's really sad to see how badly the chickens came home to roost.

Actually Popper, if you're serious, I understand Banner did bring Howie in to assist with cap management. Howie was a bright young Fordam Law graduate whose parents were good friends of Banner. Howie, an ambitious young lad, demonstrated his gratitude to Banner by publicly sucking up while covertly sabotaging his mentor.

Side note: When asked what credentials Howie has to be an NFL General Manager, Jeff Lurie replied "He got a real purty mouth ain't he!".

If true that Andy is/was too unfamililar with assistants from around the league I say it reinforces what I have said for a long time---he has too much on his plate. Beause of the he let his coaching duties suffer. More and More people are coming around to what I have thought for along time
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
                          Hope is not a strategy

I don't think that's the case with regards to assistants. What happens is that when you come into a HC position from an assistant's role, you are closer to the scene and know all of the good assistants around the league. You talk to them as a peer.

Once you become a HC, that relationship goes away and it's harder to stay connected to the core of assistant coaches around the league to get a read on who would fit with you. You are relying on others to help you make those calls. Appears that Reid was leaning on Howie to help with that, and Howie did a bad job.
