  • Salary Cap projection... Sorta.

    http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/...cap-space.html

The Eagles will carry $7.933 million from 2016 into the 2017 league year, according to the NFLPA, giving them additional salary cap space. The money is similar to rollover minutes on a cell phone plan -- it was unused in 2016, so it's added to the Eagles' cap space in 2017.

The salary cap has not yet been established for 2017, so it is unknown how much cap space the Eagles will have. In December, ESPN projected that the 2017 salary cap would be between $163 million and $165 million. The Eagles have about $168.7 mllion in salary liabilities that will count against the cap in 2017, according to overthecap.com. So even with the $7.933 million rolled over from last season, the Eagles will be tight on cap space.

Of course, they're expected to open up space by releasing, trading, or restructuring contracts of expensive veterans. Left tackle Jason Peters, defensive end Connor Barwin, running back Ryan Mathews, center Jason Kelce, cornerback Leodis McKelvin, and linebacker Mychal Kendricks are among the players with expensive contracts on whom the Eagles must make decisions in the coming weeks.

I'm not too worried about the cap to tell you the truth MD. There's always a way around it.

I think the cap winds up in the 168 range, so that just about makes the salaries they owe and the cap hits a wash. The cap looks tight on the surface but they could quickly free up some dollars by cutting or trading the following:

      savings
      Peters 9.2
      Barwin 7.75
      Kelce 3.8
      Mathews 4
      Mckelvin 3.2
      Rollover 7.933
      35.883

With that they could do something like this:

Name Contract guarantee 1st year cap number
Logan Ryan CB 4yrs/38 mill 20 mill 5.75
      R Woods WR 5yrs/40 mill 20 mill 4.8
      D Jackson WR 4yrs/36mill 20 mill 4.5
Ricky Wagner RT 5yrs/42 mill 25 mill 4.92
      19.97
4 Starters at positions of need Still gives them 15 million to do things like resign Jordan Mathews, add some lesser free agents, sign draft picks etc. If they go in this direction then receiver becomes less of a need in the draft, they can go CB, OG, RB in the first three rounds (in some order).

Cant see them bringing in two receivers especially if Douglas gets to call the shots. No talk about a DT to replace Logan? I also think they redo Peters deal if he will accept it.

That was more of an example than what exactly they should do. In other words they can get to a point where they have plenty of money to achieve whatever it is they want to achieve this offseason

There's always a way. The biggest reason behind NE's success is that they are ruthless when it comes to vets. Absolutely heartless. He'll I heard a guy on the radio tell how he got cut on Christmas by Belechek in a 20 second conversation. They traded Ty Law one week before the season and won a SB. Vince Wolfork wouldn't take a pay cut-gone. Maybe the Eagles will have to take that stance too with Peters and Barwin. It's a very nasty business.
