Eagles vs. Miami Dolphins: Winners and losers from Day 1

PHILADELPHIA -- After a two-hour, grueling practice on Monday, players from both the Eagles and Miami Dolphins spoke about how good it was for them to get work in against another team.
For some players, that was true, as it allowed them to really impress their coaches and show they can do much more than just beat up on their own teammates.
For others, however, the practice was a step in the wrong direction towards impressing the coaches and making the team.
Here is a look at some of the winners and losers from Monday's practices
    Eagles Football
    WINNER: CARSON WENTZ
Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was the big winner on Monday, as he took what had been a few rough days of practice -- and a poor showing agains the Buffalo Bills last week -- and firmly put it in the rear-view mirror.
Wentz was razor sharp against the Dolphins, completing 78% of his passes and throwing six touchdowns -- and not turning the ball over a single time.
What was impressive about Wentz was how sharp he was down the middle of the field, as he didn't have a single pass sail on him. That accuracy was a big reason the team did so well in the red zone against the Dolphins, which is an area the Eagles have struggled in during training camp and in preseason games.

One positive about Wentz since he has come to the Eagles last year is that he never seems to shy away from a moment, whether it be his first career start or primetime games against divisional opponents.
Monday's practice was not near the stage of a regular season game, but seeing Wentz did was he was supposed to do to a team coming into his city to practice against his team -- he dominated.

CARSON WENTZ REPORT CARD FROM MONDAY

    LOSER: EAGLES' RUN DEFENSE
While Wentz was busy carving up the Dolphins' secondary, the Eagles' run defense was busy getting almost as equally dominated on the other side of the field.
The Dolphins ran the the ball at will against the Eagles, with the Miami offensive line creating massive holes throughout the 11-on-11 team drills. Although the teams were not tackling to the ground, it didn't seem like the ability to do so would have made much of a difference.
For a team that is going to live and die with their defensive line this season, seeing them struggle on Monday was not a good sign.
    WINNER: TORREY SMITH
Eagles receiver Torrey Smith had a very strong day against the Dolphins, doing exactly what the Eagles are hoping he can do for them this season -- get behind an opposing defense.
Smith's best catch of the day came from around 25-30 yards out, as he burst past cornerback Byron Maxwell down the sideline and didn't look back, hauling in the touchdown pass from Wentz in the back of the end zone.
Smith had another touchdown as well against the Dolphins, and put to ease some of the concern from the fact he hasn't had a single target or catch yet in the preseason.
    LOSER: JORDAN HICKS
The Eagles lost their staring middle linebacker at the beginning of practice on Monday when Hicks went down with an injury. The team has yet to give an update on the injury.
Although it isn't known if it is serious, seeing Hicks -- who has struggled to stay healthy -- go down and miss an entire practice is not good, and it highlighted just how important he is to the team's defense.
HOW MANY GAMES WILL THE EAGLES WIN IN 2017?
    WINNER: ALSHON JEFFERY
Jeffery dominated the Miami Dolphins on Monday during the team's joint practices, catching passes all over the field and looking for the first time like the dominant, No. 1 receiver the Eagles are hoping he can be for them this season.
Jeffery caught six passes, almost as many as he has had in the prior 12 practices in which the the Eagles have run team drills. Jeffery had nine of Wentz's 32 passes thrown in his direction, easily the most of any day in camp, and roughly 28% of the passes Wentz threw against the Dolphins.
What was also encouraging for Jeffery was that he made it through practice healthy after taking part in all of the team drills -- a sign that he is now fully recovered from the shoulder injury that has wrecked the first three weeks of camp for him.
ALSHON JEFFERY DOMINATES AGAINST THE DOLPHINS
    LOSER: MICHAEL THOMAS
Miami Dolphins safety Michael Thomas was all over the field on Monday, but there wasn't much positive that came from it.
Thomas dropped what should have been an interception from Wentz, as he was unable to hold onto the ball as he went down to the ground. It wasn't an easy catch, but it was one Thomas should have made.
Later on in the day, Thomas came across the field and broke up a pass intended for receiver Marcus Johnson, but hit him in the helmet and caused Johnson to go down on the field for a few minutes before being helped up. In a game Thomas likely would have been called for a penalty.

    WINNER: DARREN SPROLES
Eagles running back Darren Sproles has not yet played in a preseason game yet, so Monday was the team's first chance to see him against another team since training camp opened.
They had to be thrilled with what they saw.
Sproles is easily the most dynamic player the Eagles have in the backfield, and it shows after watching players like LeGarrette Blount and Wendell Smallwood get the majority of carries in both practices and the preseason.
Sproles, even in his 13th NFL season, still made cuts on Monday against the Dolphins that other players in the Eagles' backfield can only dream of making. Even without tackling it was clear that the Dolphins' defenders were having trouble getting Sproles down.
SHOULD DEREK BARNETT START OVER VINNY CURRY?
    LOSER: MALCOLM JENKINS
Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins struggled against quick receivers last year, especially when the team asked him to go down to the line of scrimmage in man coverage.
This season the Eagles are hoping to have to ask Jenkins to not play up at the line as much, as Monday was a good example why.
Jenkins simply didn't have the speed to cover the quicker receivers on the Dolphins, allowing one catch for about 30 yards to receiver Kenny Stills down the sideline.
The Eagles need to hope that they have a nickel cornerback (Ron Brooks?) step up this season and play well.
    WINNER: NATE GERRY
The more camp has gone on, the more rookie linebacker Nate Gerry is starting to stand out -- and Monday was no different.
Gerry had a very nice pass breakup in the back of the end zone against the Dolphins, and should have came away with the interception -- but he dropped the ball.
The drop aside, seeing Gerry hold his own in coverage in the red zone is a very good sign for the Eagles, as their linebackers have struggled in coverage over the past few seasons.
EAGLES: STOCK UP, STOCK DOWN REPORT
    LOSER: EAGLES' RED ZONE DEFENSE
Despite the nice play from Gerry, the Eagles' red zone defense did not impress against quarterback Jay Cutler and the Dolphins' first team offense.
The Dolphins seemed to have their way with the Eagles, scoring on the majority of their plays near the goal line. What was especially alarming was how they all seemed to come in the passing game, with Cutler repeatedly finding open receivers in the back of the end zone.
The speed of the Dolphins' receivers was clearly an issue for the Eagles, and that was especially true in the red zone.
    LOSERS: EAGLES CORNERBACKS
Even with new cornerback Ronald Darby -- who did have an interception -- it was a rough day for the Eagles' re-worked secondary.
It shouldn't be surprising that the Eagles struggled agains the Dolphins' receivers, as the Dolphins have serious speed with DeVante Parker, Jarvis Landry and Kenny Stills as their top three wideouts.
Speed is not a strength for the Eagles' cornerbacks, especially for Jalen Mills, Ron Brooks and Rasul Douglas -- and that was highlighted big time against the Dolphins.
    OVERALL WINNER: IT'S A TIE!
Siting on the fence is not normally my style, but on Monday, it is only fair to say the Eagles and Dolphins played to a tie in their first practice.
Both offenses were clicking on Monday, as both quarterbacks had strong days and the defenses suffered because of it. There was only one combined turnover forced from both defenses, and there were no notable drops from any of the receivers. It seemed for every big throw Wentz made, Cutler was on the other field matching the Eagles' quarterback.
It will be interesting to see which defense comes out on Tuesday -- which is also expected to have plenty of team drills -- and makes up for a poor showing on Monday.

At this rate with the RB's, we may be in the position next year of begging Sproles not to retire yet.

Pumphrey was a dumb pick. I'm really more interested in the injuries to Hicks and Graham right now.
