A GOOD NBA bench is like a 24-hour convenience store- it has what you need when you need it. An opponent is lighting you up? Bring out the defensive specialists to put on the clamps. Your O is out of sync? Good thing you have a good backup guard with no ego issues. Take a look at these four players who come off the bench, but play like starters.
NEED SOME O??
~G/F Jalen Rose, Raptors
-Rose's starting numbers were 14.8 ppg on 42%FG, and 32.5% from downtown. But in 16 games as a sub, he is up to 16.9 ppg on 49.7%FG and 38.3% on treys. Signifigant improvement. Although he is not happy about coming off the bench, that is nothing that playing for a contender can't fix.
~G/F Jerry Stackhouse, Mavericks
-Don't let the 15.5 ppg fool you, Stack can still score in bunches, and despite last season's knee surgery, still takes the rock to the rack. His 86.5% from the line makes him very valuable when the game is on the line as well.
HOW ABOUT SOME D???
~F/C Tyson Chandler, Bulls
Although he is averaging just 27.1 mpg. Chandler is still ranked 12th in the league in blocks(1.83) and his 9.5 rpg is the highest in the NBA among nonstarters. With a steal a game, he is a complete defensive star stuffer.
~F Eddie Griffin, Timberwolves
-A handful of rejections behind Chandler in throwing block parties, Griffin is averages 1.74 per(15th in the league). His 6.7 rebounds per seems a little skimpy; the fact that the Wolves are are plus 35 in the category when he is on the floor is huge.
