CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Phillies have signed pitcher Aaron Nola to a four-year contract worth $45 million. The deal, which will be officially announced on Wednesday, includes a club option for a fifth year.
Nola had been scheduled to have a salary arbitration hearing on Thursday. That will not happen. With the contract extension, the Phillies bought out all three of his arbitration years and at least one potential year of his free agency.
Nola, 25, finished third in the NL Cy Young voting last season. He finished fourth in the majors in ERA (2.37) and quality starts (25) and fifth in innings (212⅓) and WHIP (0.97) in 2018.
Nola had been seeking $6.75 million in arbitration and the Phillies had countered at $4.5 million.
Nola’s new deal calls for him to get a $2 million signing bonus and salaries of $4 million this season, $8 million in 2020, $11.75 million in 2021 and $15 million in 2022. The club option is for $16 million. The Phillies can buy out the option for $4.25 million. We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable.
