Eagles training camp Day 13 observations: Patrick Robinson has a day

The Eagles were forced inside on Monday thanks to rain. So 90 players, the coaching staff, trainers and media all crammed into the practice bubble.
As far as training camp goes, the practice was less than ideal logistically, but the Birds didn't really have a choice. It was coming down in the morning.
Just one more light practice — a 10/10/10 — on Tuesday before Thursday's preseason opener in Green Bay.
    To the observations:
    1. *Clears throat* injuries: Nick Foles (elbow), Paul Turner (shoulder), Josh Andrews (hand), Adam Zaruba (concussion) and Anthony Denham (calf) missed practice again.
Joining them on the injury report: Wendell Smallwood (hamstring) and Marcus Johnson (hamstring) missed practice.
Fletcher Cox didn't practice, but he was simply given a day off.
Alshon Jeffery practiced for the second straight day but still isn't participating in full team 11-on-11 drills yet. He did take a 7-on-7 rep Monday.
Brandon Brooks and Jordan Hicks left early. Hicks said later in the day that he just took a helmet to his side but was fine.
    2. A couple days ago, rookie receiver Shelton Gibson was dropping balls thrown directly to him. Now, he's making catches all over the field. His two leaping grabs at the open practice at the Linc on Sunday might have given him the confidence boost he needed (see story).
On Monday, the rookie made another leaping grab in WR vs. DB drills. And he nearly made a spectacular catch around a defensive back. He caught the ball on the DB's back, but couldn't secure it through his landing on the ground. Still, Gibson nearly pulling off that kind of catch was almost unthinkable based on where he was just a few days ago.
    3. Wentz was incredible on Sunday, having his best training camp performance of his young career. He came back to Earth on Monday. He made several bad throws and poor decisions. He was picked off by Patrick Robinson during team drills and had a couple others that could have been picked.
    4. How about Robinson? The veteran who has been completely roasted throughout the camp had his best day of the summer — by far. He picked off that one Wentz throw and raced down the sideline for what might have been a pick-6, and then he nearly picked off Wentz in the end zone a short time later. Robinson was very critical of himself last week — and rightfully so — but on Monday he showed he might not be completely lost.
    5. Nelson Agholor made a great catch over Rodney McLeod during the DB vs. WR drills. The ball looked like it bounced off McLeod's helmet, but Agholor was able to stay with it. Aside from that, Agholor didn't have a great day. In fact, it was probably his worst of camp. After practice, Agholor spent time catching tennis balls on deep passes.
    6. Former Villanova linebacker Don Cherry made another play on Monday. The Eagles don't have a ton of linebacker depth, so Cherry is at the very least putting his name in contention. On Monday, he dropped into coverage, jumped up and got full extention to pick off a Matt McGloin pass.
    7. Speaking of McGloin, he hasn't looked very good through camp. He's trying to prove to the Eagles that it'll be worth it to keep him on the roster as the third quarterback, but he's put himself in a pretty big hole over the last week and a half. He just has trouble hitting his targets and seems to underthrow his receivers often. The differences between the balls Wentz throws and the ones he throws are easy to spot.
    8. It was interesting that after Brooks left practice, Chance Warmack filled in at right guard, while Stefen Wisniewski stayed with the second team.
    9. Watch out for defensive tackle Gabe Wright. Most fans have probably never even heard his name, but the veteran defensive tackle has been really solid in camp. He shined in OL vs. DL 1-on-1s Monday. He was once a fourth-round pick out of Auburn but has been with two teams — Detroit and Cleveland — in his first two years. Maybe he can stick with the Eagles.
    10. C.J. Smith might end up being a starter for the Eagles at cornerback. It seems crazy to think that an undrafted guy in his second year from North Dakota State even has a chance — but he does. And unless more talent comes in soon, he has a real chance. Smith has just been better than Robinson and more consistent than Rasul Douglas. Smith has gotten a few first-team reps during practices but he probably deserves more. Smith made a great play against Mack Hollins on Monday, breaking up a pass and putting the rookie on his backside in the process.
Stupid Observation of the Day: With practice in the bubble, there wasn't a lot of space. So when the Eagles had their 9-on-7 drill, they actually went with the lines, across the field. It had to be weird for guys to look down and see the lines going the wrong way.

just in case you want to read some more stuff
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

I don't want McGloin anywhere near this roster on opening day, even as the 3rd string QB.

We should roll with a scrap heap rookie or no third stringer at all.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.
