Will Eagles' Dallas Goedert be considered one of the NFL's best tight ends by season's end?

The Philadelphia Eagles will report to training camp on Wednesday, July 24 to kick off the 2019 season.

In those 30 days leading up to training camp, NJ Advance Media will be counting down the 30 most important players for the 2019 season.

That is: the players that will be the most important to the team’s success this upcoming season.

Checking in at No. 19 is a young pass-catcher on the verge of a breakout season ...

    No. 30: LB Zach Brown

    No. 29: RB Miles Sanders

    No. 28: DE Josh Sweat

    No. 27: CB Rasul Douglas

    No. 26: DE Vinny Curry

    No. 25: LT Andre Dillard

    No. 24: LB Kamu Grugier-Hill

    No. 23: WR Nelson Agholor

    No. 22: CB Sidney Jones

    No. 21: K Jake Elliott

    No. 20: RB Jordan Howard

    No. 19 ...

    WHO: Dallas Goedert

    POSITION: Tight End

    AGE: 24

    YEAR: 2nd

HOW HE DID IN 2018: As a rookie, Goedert had a solid season considering how long it took for Eagles coaches to feature him more heavily as a part of the offense. He was also a surprisingly effective blocker — already better than Zach Ertz in that area — and is forcing the Eagles to incorporate “12 personnel” into the team’s offense at a more significant rate in order to get both Goedert and Ertz on the field at the same time.

STATS: He finished with 33 catches for 334 yards and four touchdowns while playing in all 16 games. Pro Football Focus had Goedert graded (min. 25 targets) as the 9th-best tight end overall, 15th-best pass-catcher at tight end. In blocking (min. 150 snaps), Goedert rated 39th, 5th in run blocking.

WHY HE’S IMPORTANT: Goedert is one of the key pieces that can take the Eagles from having a good offense to, potentially, the very best offense in the NFL. Goedert is a freakish athlete for his size and added some muscle to his frame this offseason which, by apperances, hasn’t impacted his quickness at all. In fact, in minicamp he looked quicker than he had as a rookie.

He was the most impressive offensive player in minicamp and truly looks ready to breakout. His numbers and targets will be limited as long as Ertz is around, but he’s going to see the field quite a bit in Year 2 and by the end of the season, it would be surprising if he wasn’t being talked about as one of the NFL’s 10 best tight ends. At minimum, he should be a bonafide red zone weapon for Carson Wentz, and it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he bested his four touchdown total from a year ago much earlier in the season.

    About the Top 10 ...

Quick aside: It’s not outlandish to think he can make that jump into the Top-10 and even Pro Bowl consideration, even as a backup. Consider: After Ertz, Travis Kelce and George Kittle — unanimously considered the three best tight ends with Rob Gronkowski retired — there’s room for new blood in the position’s elite group.

The next tier is a sizable group of similarly-skilled players like Greg Olsen, Jimmy Graham, Jason Witten, Delanie Walker, Jared Cook and Kyle Rudolph, most of which are either far past their prime, coming off serious injury (or retirement) and/or don’t exactly strike fear in opposing defenses.

Eric Ebron had a stellar season with the Colts last year, but it took him six years and Andrew Luck to get there.

O.J. Howard and David Njoku have the talent to take the next step into that top tier, but neither has quite gotten there yet. T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant haven’t yet played an NFL down. Hunter Henry missed all of last season.

Goedert’s chance at ascension has as much to do with his talent as a dearth of top-level tight end talent in the NFL. Don’t be surprised if he gets there.

HE SAID IT: “I think it’ll continue to grow, just like everybody really in that huddle. We want to try to keep enhancing everybody out there and figuring out how all these pieces will blend together. We’re very excited about Dallas. He is a very talented guy. He had a very productive rookie campaign. I know he’s just as excited as anybody to get out there and do it again this fall.” — Eagles offensive coordinator Mike Groh on Goedert’s role in 2019

Not sure there is any disagreement that the birds have one of, if not the best, TE combos in the NFL. Goedert certainly has the tools to excel; I will be curious to see if he grows or if he falls backward this year. I will also be curious to see if the staff can employ two high end TEs and keep them both happy.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
    Hope is not a strategy
    RIP

And Jackson.. And Alshon..And Aggie..............Come to of it keeping them all happy is probably our biggest problem on offense. We'll have to throw the ball 60 times a game.
