Phillies release '08 1st-round pick Anthony Hewitt

Anthony Hewitt, the Phillies' 2008 first-round pick, was released Thursday after failing to develop in seven disappointing seasons spent mostly in the lower levels of the minor leagues.

The Phillies drafted Hewitt 24th overall in '08 out of Salisbury Prep in Connecticut and gave him a $1.38 million signing bonus. He left high school as a shortstop, but was moved to third base and eventually the outfield by the Phillies. He struggled defensively at each position and struck out an alarming number of times at each stop.

For his minor-league career, Hewitt whiffed 763 times while walking just 91. He hit .223 without enough power to make up for it.

Hewitt didn't reach even High A until his fifth minor-league season in 2012. He spent all of 2013 at Double A and had his best offensive season as a professional, but got off to a lousy start at Reading this year and was demoted back to Clearwater.

After going 4 for 31 with 15 strikeouts as a 25-year-old with the Threshers, the team announced his release Thursday afternoon.

It closes the book on a player who stands as a symbol of the Phils' early-round draft failures over the last decade. Since 2003, the Phillies have used their first draft pick on a high school player eight of 12 times. Only four of those 12 picks reached the majors, with Joe Savery's 44 MLB games leading the way.

Joe Savery is the best of the bunch, sad, fucking sad

Santana latest ex-Phils piece to debut for Astros

Is the Phillies' front office holding on too long?

Chances are you're tired of pulling out your hair over this: The Astros on Tuesday promoted yet another former Phillies prospect who was acquired via the now infamous Hunter Pence trade in 2011.

Domingo Santana, a power-hitting 21-year-old outfielder, was batting .304/.383/.502 in Triple A before his callup. He went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts and a run in his major-league debut.

Santana, along with Jarred Cosart, Jonathan Singleton and Josh Zeid were shipped to the Astros on July 29, 2011 for Pence, who was flipped to the Giants exactly one year and two days later for a much less enticing package of Tommy Joseph, Nate Schierholtz and Seth Rosin.

All four pieces the Astros acquired in the Pence deal have now reached the major leagues.

Cosart, 24, flirted with a no-hitter in his debut last season and has since established himself as a vital piece in Houston's rotation moving forward. In just about one full season of work, he's gone 9-7 with a 3.19 ERA in 27 games.

Singleton, 22, was promoted earlier this year and has shown growing pains over 27 games, hitting .191 with four homers and 37 strikeouts, but has a very high upside. He was a 19-year-old Single-A prospect when he was dealt by the Phillies, who seemingly had no use for another left-handed, power-hitting first baseman.

Now Santana, 21, looks like he could be another gem. Originally signed by the Phillies as a 16-year-old out of the Dominican Republic in 2009, he had progressed as far as Single-A Lakewood when they traded him.

Santana had just 21 homers in 236 games for Phillies affiliates, but he's developed his power stroke since joining the Astros' organization. Since 2012 at various levels, the 6-foot-5, 225-pound right-hander has slugged 61 homers in 315 games.

There's also Zeid, 27, a middling righty reliever who's pitched in 42 games with a 4.53 ERA over the past two years. His upside is an above-average reliever and likely nothing more. But he has shown the ability to throw strikes and owns a 2.31 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Fox Sports rightly pointed out it's far too early to put this trade in the same category as the Bartolo Colon deal between the Expos and Indians in 2002. (In exchange for sending Colon to Montreal, Cleveland received future All-Stars Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore and Brandon Phillips in return.)

Unfortunately, it has the potential to get there. And the worst part is, Pence left the Phils long ago without contributing to another World Series title.

I don't "hate" Rubin. In fact given the chance I might have made some of the same moves. Sometimes it just doesn't work out.

I am very disappointed in how the whole organization and Rubin allowed the team to get so old without seeing the coming problem. Also the Scouting department has been abysmal, and sadly you don't get to see that until it's too late.

But I'm an ass so wadda I know.
