Default Ertz is hurting

Tight end Zach Ertz will not play in the preseason with a core muscle injury. Ertz met with Dr. William Meyers, a Philadelphia-based sports hernia specialist. It is unknown whether or not Ertz will have a procedure done. Kelly is confident that Ertz will be ready for the regular season opener in Atlanta.

I really don't like the sound of this.. these things can linger if they are not taken care of quickly.

Zach Ertz Injury: Eagles tight end will miss preseason but should be ready for season opener

By Brandon Lee Gowton  @BrandonGowton on Aug 14, 2015, 12:16p 47

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz will miss the entire 2015 NFL preseason due to a "core muscle injury" as described by Chip Kelly. The head coach confirmed as much during a press conference prior to the team's training camp practice on Friday morning. Kelly noted that Ertz saw sports hernia specialist Dr. Williams Meyers recently.

Ertz went down in practice on Wednesday after getting bumped by a defender. He walked to the sideline on his own power but appeared to be in pain. Ertz left practice without talking to reporters and then sat out of Thursday's practice.

The good news for the Eagles is that Ertz should be ready to play in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, according to Kelly.

Ertz's injury opens the door for depth players to step up this summer. Second year tight end Trey Burton is bound to receive more playing time. Rookie undrafted tight ends Eric Tomlinson, Andrew Gleichert, and Justin Tukes might be able to battle for a fourth tight end spot on the 53-man roster. Tomlinson has stood out in recent practices.

The Eagles will hope Ertz's injury isn't one that hampers his playing time and/or effectiveness. The team is counting on him to be a big contributor in 2015.

Update: Eagles TE Zach Ertz needs "procedure" to repair torn groin

In an update to a previous story, Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz will have a "procedure" to repair his torn groin according to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News.

Bowen describes Ertz's injury as a "minor groin tear" but it sounds similar to a sports hernia situation where players miss at least four weeks and possibly more. Groin surgeon Dr. William Meyers reportedly told Eagles coach Chip Kelly that Ertz will likely miss "couple of weeks and thinks he'll be fine by the opener." Despite the positive spin, the surgery is another red flag in what has thus far been a disappointing NFL career for Ertz. He has been unable to beat out veteran Brent Celek for the job as undisputed starter despite possessing superior talent and has scored only seven touchdowns in his first two years in the league.

I believe we had a guy a couple years ago with this injury...a "sports hernia".
My recollection is that they kept putting off surgery in the hopes it would heal and it's just kept on keepin' on.

Was it McNabb maybe? I can't remember!

almost 500 as a rook and 700 in year 2 and he's playing behind a TE impersonating an Olineman. What does he need to do to prove himself ? I don't think you can call him disappointing.

Popper,

He hasn't been on the field as much as we'd all like and his number have suffered accordingly, 'cause he's just not a very good blocker.

He's been working hard on improving his blocking. Maybe that's where the damn sports hernia came from.

Any way you cut it, it sucks.

Yea that disappointing career stuff is nonsense IMO. This is a setback but I would let him rest until he is ready--even if it is game 3. I see him as ready to make a name for himself and there is not need to let this linger and cause a season long slump
