    7/26/11 Update...

ESPN's Chris Mortensen says that Texans will "probably" make free agent Nnamdi Asomugha the biggest offer.

Interesting. For most of the offseason, Houston media speculated that the Texans wouldn't be willing to break the bank for Asomugha despite a desperate need in the secondary. The question now is Asomugha willing to play in Houston? He wants to get into acting (Jets) and has also been linked repeatedly to the Cowboys and Eagles.
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that free agent Nnamdi Asomugha may be willing to "take a little less money" to sign with a playoff contender.

The Texans could qualify as a contender in a projection, but the latest word from Mort is that the Jets are in play. We'd add the Ravens as a dark horse after they slashed $18.6 million worth of base salary on Monday. Regardless, it's clear Asomugha's market will be as big -- if not bigger -- than anticipated, especially if he's willing to consider teams that lack monster cap space.
The Newark Star-Ledger confirms the Jets have "reached out" to free agent Nnamdi Asomugha.

This comes on the heels of an earlier report from ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Jets plan to "make a run at" Asomugha to pair him with Darrelle Revis. Multiple reports suggest Asomugha is willing to leave money on the table to sign with playoff contender, and Rex Ryan's squad fits the bill. Asomugha also has designs on an acting career, which may give the Jets yet another edge.
According to MLive.com's Tom Kowalski, free agent Nnamdi Asomugha wants to play for the Jets.

Kowalski is a Lions reporter, but he's presumably done digging on Asomugha because Detroit has so often been connected to this year's premier free agent. That digging apparently led Kowalski to believe Asomugha wants to play in New York. There have been several other indications this is the case, so it isn't a crazy notion. If Asomugha is willing to take a discount to play in the destination he covets, the marriage could very well happen.

      7/27/11 Update...

NFL Network's Mike Lombardi reports that the Jets will "focus" on signing free agent Nnamdi Asomugha "for the next 12 to 14 hours."

Lombardi reports that the Jets' approach "all along" was to get Santonio Holmes locked up first, and be aggressive from there. He is convinced Asomugha can fit under the Jets' cap because of the NFL's new "soft" salary limits. There are also strong indications that Asomugha would take less money to play in New York.
NFL Network's Mike Lombardi reports that the 49ers have jumped into the race to get free agent Nnamdi Asomugha under contract.

Lombardi calls the Niners the Jets "main competition," and assures "they are in it strong." San Francisco can clear a large amount of salary cap space by releasing Nate Clements, a move that would surely happen on Thursday if a deal with Asomugha was reached. Writers on the 49ers beat have been slightly skeptical of an Asomugha pursuit, but never ruled it out.
NFL Network's Mike Lombardi reports that the Jets are prepared to pay free agent Nnamdi Asomugha $12 million a year.

The question is whether that will cut it for Asomugha, who at the start of free agency was rumored to be commanding upwards of $20 million per season. In the story linked below, SI's Peter King insists, "If you don't think Rex Ryan is pushing for this, you're crazy." The Jets, for now, look to be the front-runners for Asomugha. But the 49ers are pushing hard according to multiple reports, and the Texans look to still have some interest.
The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram confirms the Cowboys "like their corners" and will not get in the Nnamdi Asomugha derby.

Dallas' salary cap purge spurred speculation that a run at Asomugha was imminent, but they've turned their attention to safety instead. The Asomugha decision is expected to come down to the Jets, 49ers, and Texans.

        7/28/11 Update...

The Texans are "in the mix" for free agent Nnamdi Asomugha, sources tell the Houston Chronicle.

The problem for Houston is that Jets are now reportedly nearly $10 million under the cap -- and that's before they restructure contracts. It's going to be hard to pry Asomugha away from Broadway and coach Rex Ryan if they can't even offer the most money. The Texans may be better off turning their attention to free agent Johnathan Joseph.
The Texans have "moved into the lead" for free agent Nnamdi Asomugha, according to NFL Network's Michael Lombardi.

The Texans must be doing some serious restructuring. Lombardi says that Asomugha's money will be in the $12-$14 million per year range, which is more than the Texans were expected to fork over. Still, this could be a ploy from Asomugha's camp to drive the Jets' offer up. The bidding war is on for the best free agent available.
According to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, the 49ers are unlikely to land free agent Nnamdi Asomugha.

"I'd be surprised at this point if they got Nnamdi," La Canfora wrote on Twitter. The 49ers cleared $15.7 million worth of cap space with Nate Clements' release, but a report minutes ago suggested they are now pursuit of Johnathan Joseph instead. We're speculating, but the Asomugha sweepstakes looks to be coming down to a two-horse race: It's the Jets against the Texans.
