Former Washington Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington was injured in a motorcycle crash this afternoon near the intersection of Route 50 and the Capital Beltway, according to police.
Arrington crashed his motorcycle around 1 p.m. while heading west on Route 50 near Exit 7, according to Maryland State Police spokesman First Sgt. Russell Newell.
Newell said Arrington sustained multiple injuries and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. No other vehicles were involved in the accident and one else was injured.
Arrington, who will turn 29 Wednesday, and the Redskins parted ways in March 2006 after six seasons. After a lengthy series of negotiations, the team and Arrington reached an agreement to allow the former Pro Bowl linebacker to become a free agent.
Arrington's relationship with the franchise had soured. A three-time Pro Bowler who was once the face of the Redskins, he had been benched for much of the early part of the 2005 season and clashed with the organization in recent years over his contract and the handling of various injuries. Arrington, the second overall pick in the 2000 NFL draft, missed almost all of the 2004 season because of injury and was not an every-down player in 2005 even when on the field.
He signed with the New York Giants in the spring of 2006 and played in six games before rupturing his Achilles' tendon on Oct. 23. The Giants released him after the season.
