  • Question for the board

I am rewatching the Eagles-Vikings NFCC game and I can’t help, but be impressed by Ajayi. He is still available. It is also the end of May and Sproles seems to be leaning towards returning one more time. The question: would you sign one or maybe both if you were Howie?

I know we have a full compliment of backs right now, but I would still try to bring them both in for camp. If they are both healthy our backs this year would include Clement, Howard, Sanders, Ajayi and Sproles. Talk about a killer platoon! That depth would allow both Ajayi and Sproles to take off every other game or every third game and help keep them healthy. I don’t know what Sproles is looking for contract wise but Ajayi would be a pretty cheap deal. I would definitely kick the tires on them in camp and see if we can make this work.

Myself....no. I just think those guys provided the birds what they needed at the time but you have to move on at some point. Maybe his knee is 100% or maybe not. If Clement is healthy, and I know no more than anyone else, they are in good shape. He surely isn't a star but Smallwood isn't a bad #4. Specifically because he has been around the team so he knows the program and does a pretty good job picking up a blitzer.
If I am Doug and I am concerned about the return game I might kick the tires on Sproles but otherwise I am ready to move on
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
    Hope is not a strategy

I really am an Ajayi fan Juk. I guess that his knees have teams turned off. Good back and teammate.

Me too 60. I think a healthy Ajayi would be the best back on this team (Sanders is going to have to prove it to me). I would love to fit him in if all the other teams pass on him. But, I just don't see any way possible, unless he is a FA and we have major injuries later on.

I also love me some Sproles and would love to see him back 1 more time.

Sign them all..... sort it out in camp. Been saying it all along....... bring in as much talent as you can. See who is healthy and who isn’t... see who wants it and who doesn’t...... see who stays healthy ..... should not even be a question or a debate, IMM.

The question is would Ajayi be healthy enough to compete in training camp? I don't think with that torn knee he will be. He seems like a guy who will be picked up by a team that has an injury once the season starts and he is closer to healthy.

I don’t think Ajayi can take the pounding and has lost a step probably with yet another knee injury. Go younger and healthier.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

For a 1 year vet minimum “prove it” deal I’d take a chance on him.

I'd be ok with a 1yr deal with Ajayi but Sproles I hate to say should retire. Great player but nobody beats Father Time.

I agree J, it’s time for Sproles to go. If we lose someone during the season I’d bring back Ajayi though. He’s a heck of a talent if he can go. Any changes in the offense he would pick up very quickly because he's such a bright guy.

I'm still ready to move on from the past. The only area I would consider bringing Sproles back for would be return duty. Birds really don't have someone to do that unless they think D Jack is up for it. Boston Scott may be but he isn't money by any means. Evidently Schefter thinks Sproles will play somewhere.....
'Sproles originally played to make a retirement decision in May, but the Philadelphia Eagles running back may have other plans to return in 2019. ESPN's Adam Schefter was on 97.5 The Fanatic Wednesday, revealing Sproles is considering pushing off retirement in hopes of playing a 15th NFL season.
Will the Philadelphia Eagles be interested? Sproles would consider them if they would make a call, along with other teams he's played for turning his 14-year career.
"I think he wants to play," Schefter said. "I think it's the kind of thing (where) he's out in California and I think he'd like to go back and play for one of the teams he's played for in the past, whether that's the Eagles, the New Orleans Saints, or the Los Angeles Chargers. He wants to be in a competitive, winning situation.
"He's not in a rush, he's done this enough to know exactly what he needs to do to be ready. I think at the appropriate time when a team comes calling, he will certainly be willing to listen to what they have to say. Right now, it's not like 'well I got to be at OTAs in Philadelphia or OTAs in New Orleans,' that's not what he wants to do. What i think he wants to do is sit back, wait and see if anybody wants him and if someone whats him at the appropriate time, I think he'll be enticed to wind up playing."
Sproles has mentioned to Eagles teammates and staff he seriously could want another year in NFL before the end of the 2018 season and is going to consider all his options.
Eagles head coach Doug Pederson isn't going to rush Sproles back, knowing there's a spot for him on the Eagles roster if he wants it.
"This is Darren's decision," Pederson said at the NFL Coaches Breakfast in March. "I can't speak for Howie (Roseman) or any of the other guys in the building, but we'd love to have him. This is their time. I get it, I was there once. We'll respect his decision when it comes."
Sproles played an instrumental role in the Eagles' offensive resurgence in the final five games of the regular season, having 24 carries for 110 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and 11 catches for 138 yards (12.5 yards per catch) in the five games since his return.
The Eagles were 4-1 in the five games Sproles has played in, with Sproles averaging 7.1 yards per touch.Sproles has ignited a spark in the Eagles offense, which averaged 27.4 points per game since his return in Week 13.
Sproles is the oldest player ever to have over 100 yards from scrimmage in Eagles franchise history. He is sixth all-time in all-purpose yards with 19,520 yards....just 162 yards behind former Oakland Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown for fifth (19,682).
In 14 seasons, Sproles has 8,302 yards from scrimmage (3,486 rushing, 4,816 receiving) and 55 touchdowns. He also has 2,875 punt return yards and 8,352 kick return yards and nine total touchdowns.
If Sproles returns, the Eagles would have filled a void at punt returner along with an extra receiver in the running back rotation. Sproles would certainly be welcomed back to the Eagles and would be even better in a reduced role.'

Would Sproles consider a role where he is just a returner with very limited PT otherwise?
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy

I'm not sure I trust Doug to only give him limited playing time if he's on the team...

Sproles could make sense as a 4th RB, honestly, if no young RB steps up -- we don't have anyone like him. But we have to have someone else that Doug trusts in goal line situations and other. We'd have to cut all RBs who are not Howard, Sanders, and Clement, but that may be reasonable. But if a young guy steps up in camp, that may be a harder situation -- would be nice to have someone that could be returner this year, but a bigger contributor in years going forward, since Howard could easily be gone next year. Sproles would *definitely* be gone after this year so he's more of the veteran-patch type of signing if other options fall through at this point.

                          Then there is this:

                          Boston Scott - RB

Two weeks ago, Corey Clement seemed to be the obvious choice to be the Eagles’ No. 3 back, were he healthy enough. But Clement hasn’t been able to get on the field, and that has given players like Boston Scott a chance to shine and potentially take Clement’s job.

                          @BrandonGowton
Doug Pederson brings up Boston Scott when asked about a player who can fill the Darren Sproles role.

“He would be the kind of guy who’s taken that role over right now.”#Eagles

Scott has shown a solid ability to catch the ball so far this off-season, and getting a comp to the great Darren Sproles is certainly a feather in his cap. Scott, who played for Louisiana Tech and was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 6th round of last year’s draft, was signed by the team in Week 15 of last year from New Orleans’ practice squad. He rushed for 1,840 yards and 14 TDs during his college career and was a return specialist as well.

Scott appears to be the front-runner to get the first reps as the Eagles’ punt returner (kick returning in the NFL generally doesn’t exist anymore) and if Pederson’s accolades are any indication, he could enter the season as the team’s No. 3 running back.
