Noah K. Murray/ The Star-LedgerGiants tight end Jake Ballard was waived by the team Tuesday in a transaction that will make room on the roster for wide receiver Michael Clayton. Ballard could land on the practice squad once he clears waivers.
7:30 p.m. UPDATED Giants have confirmed all roster moves.
The Giants have yet to announce the Michael Clayton signing or the corresponding roster move, but they've completed the latter part of that transaction.
Tight end Jake Ballard, signed to the active roster off the practice squad on Saturday, has been waived, according to someone who viewed Tuesday's official NFL transaction wire. The person, who requested anonymity because the Giants haven't made their announcement, said the Clayton signing was not on the report, which indicates the move isn't yet official. But it will be.
Ballard, an undrafted free agent who said he was on the field for eight offensive snaps against the Eagles Sunday, will probably land back on the Giants' practice squad once he clears waivers.
Ballard, who was with the Giants all spring and summer, has been on the practice squad since the start of the regular season. Previously, he was waived by the team after suffering a hamstring injury.
Ballard's path back to the practice squad might have been cleared Tuesday evening when the Eagles notified cornerback Brandon Hughes they'll be signing him off the Giants' practice squad, according to someone informed of the transaction who asked not to be named because the Eagles have yet to announce the move.
The Giants signed Hughes, a former fifth-round pick of the Chargers, when San Diego waived him in September. The team gave him more than the standard practice-squad salary as incentive to join their practice squad.
Hughes' signing with the Eagles could be to compensate for the loss of CB/KR Ellis Hobbs, who suffered a neck injury when he was hit by the Giants' Dave Tollefson.

I had completely forgotten that this is how they obtained Hughes. (See above.)

Reuben Frank is reporting that they extended him by 1 year. He would have been a free agent after 2012. He's now under contract thru 2013. His cap number for 2012 remains pretty much the same. If he makes the team in 2013, he'll get $630K, the minimum for a 3rd year pro.
