Giants wide receiver Golden Tate is appealing a PED suspension, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and confirmed by NJ Advance Media.

Giants’ WR Golden Tate is appealing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Performance Enhacing Substance policy and believes he has legitimate case, league sources tell ESPN.

Tate will be permitted to practice during his appeal, but given that this is his first offense, he could face a four-game suspension if he loses. Should Tate be forced to serve the suspension, he would not be permitted to practice or enter the team facility.

Unlike one year ago, when the Giants signed defensive lineman Josh Mauro knowing that a four-game suspension loomed, Tate’s issue arose after he inked with the Giants on March 14, a person with knowledge of the possible suspension told NJ Advance Media.

News of Tate’s suspension comes just two days after wide receiver Sterling Shepard fractured his thumb and Corey Coleman tore his ACL, plunging the Giants wide receiver depth chart into uncertainty during the first week of training camp.

Additionally, wide receiver Brittan Golden suffered a groin injury towards the end of Friday’s practice.

The Giants signed Tate earlier this offseason, shortly after trading Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns. Following Shepard’s injury, Tate ran with the first-team offense during Friday’s practice and is expected to be one of the Giants’ top-two wide receivers.

In addition to Tate’s ability to thrive in the slot, or on the outside, the Giants are banking on him helping as a run-blocker for running back Saquon Barkley, as well.

“His skillset is like Sterling’s,” Shurmur told reporters of Tate, last month during the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. “When we run the ball, they are gritty blockers and you can play them on the edge and in the slot. Then, when you throw the ball, they have both done good work in the slot and have had production outside. You can play both guys wherever.”

Last season, Tate caught 74 passes for 795 yards and four touchdowns with the Detroit Lions and Eagles.
