Eagles’ Ron Brooks Suffers Season-Ending Injury

The Eagles are losing their nickel cornerback.

By Brandon Lee Gowton | October 24, 2016 at 12:07 pm

Eagles cornerback Ron Brooks suffered a ruptured quadriceps tendon in Philadelphia’s victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Doug Pederson confirmed as much during his Monday morning press conference. The Daily News was first to report Brooks’ injury.

Brooks will have season-ending surgery. The Eagles are expected to place him on the injured reserve list in order to free up a roster spot.

Brooks signed with Philadelphia this offseason to be the team’s starting nickel cornerback. Losing him for the season means the Eagles will have to shift their secondary around. Starting safety Malcolm Jenkins has the ability to play in the slot. Pederson suggested the Birds could look to move him there in nickel packages with Jaylen Watkins filling in at safety.

The loss of Brooks isn’t good news for an Eagles team that’s already thin at cornerback. Veteran starter Leodis McKelvin has been hampered by a hamstring injury for most of the season. McKelvin, Nolan Carroll, seventh-round pick Jalen Mills, and undrafted rookie free agent C.J. Smith are now the only four healthy corners on Philadelphia’s 53-man roster.

One thing to keep an eye on is the Eagles’ interest in Aaron Grymes. Geoff Mosher reports Grymes is set to visit the NovaCare Complex on Monday for a physical. Grymes played well for the Eagles this summer before suffering a shoulder injury and getting waived with an injury settlement. It’s been over two months since the former CFL product suffered an AC sprain.

Stay tuned for more updates regarding Eagles roster moves.
