Eagles’ Brent Celek reportedly takes a pay cut

The Eagles opened up some more cap spaceby Brandon Lee Gowton@BrandonGowton Apr 18, 2017, 1:47pm EDT

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek has agreed to take a pay cut for the 2017 season. ESPN’s Field Yates reports the 32-year-old veteran will now make $3 million this year instead of $4 million.

The Eagles signed Celek to a three-year, $12 million contract extension worth $6 million guaranteed last year. He played 38.7% of Philadelphia’s offensive snaps in 2016 and had 14 receptions for 155 yards (zero touchdowns). A lot of his contributions came as being a blocker.

It’s not a surprise to see a team-first guy like Celek take a pay cut. The Eagles are up tight against the cap so they’re looking to save money any way they can. Celek is the second Eagles player to take a pay cut this offseason. Cornerback Ron Brooks also agreed to take less money this season.

Celek projects to be the Eagles’ second tight end behind starter Zach Ertz once again. The Eagles also have versatile backup and special teams standout Trey Burton on the roster.

Celek has always been a class act. Spent time with him in 2010 on the Eagles cruise just a stand up guy.

I think the Eagles were up against having enough money to draft, now they should have the 5 million they need.

Looks like maybe the birds didn't get as much back as hoped from Daniel departing. From day one Celek has been a team guy. May not go down as the best Eagle ever but he has been a standup guy and quality TE. Wish Peters would have been willing to give a few bucks back. And Johnson for that matter.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
      Hope is not a strategy

We really don't know about the Daniels situation. I think they are restructuring as many as they can to get some additional dollars in case either a good player comes free they want or lets face it they have quite a few guys on 1 year deals that they may want to resign during the season.

I doubt those 2 things are related since what they get back from Daniel goes against the 2018 cap. And the $1M savings from Celek goes against the 2017 cap.
