  • Help! Modem question -PROBLEM SOLVED!

I've got a modem question with which I need assistance.

I recently bought a Cisnet laptop, installed XP, and signed on with Earthlink for email. I use dial-up for access.

    Stop laughing.

I find that I get kicked off the Net much more with this set up than I do with my older Dell desktop PC that has XP and Juno for email. Earthlink tech rep tells me that I need to regularly update my modem driver, and this is probably why I'm getting kicked off. Refers me to http://www.conexant.com/support/md_d...ssistance.html Sounds like a story to me.

    Thoughts or ideas?

Up until several months ago I was using dial up as well (not Juno or Earthlink, butthrough the school where my wife works). We rarely got booted from the net but the speeds were so slow it made you want to pull out your hair. Can you turn off the compression software and see if it helps or is there no way to turn that feature off? If you can I'd play around with it to see if you can trade some speed for stability.

If you can identify your modem for me I can probably find an updated driver for you.

        1. Open the Control Panel
        2. Open Phone and Modem options
        3. Click on the Modems tab
        4. Tell me what your modem name is on the list.

Our Juno account is $5 a month. Our Earthlink account is Free this year due to rebate. If we keep it, it's $21.95 a month.
I'll see what broadband accounts go for up here.

No idea how to play around with that.

Here's a simple question but Occams Razor and all...

When yo set up your new dialup, did you put *70 before the number? Maybe you're getting kicked off cause people are calling you?

Good thought, but the Earthlink call ID/call waiting option is actually very cool and has not been a problem.

I'm starting to think that my Trend Micro anti-virus is the culprit. I can't send email any more unless I turn it off. I have to call them.

Saratoga, I use the home version of that as well (Zone Alarm, Trand Micro is the corporate version). I occassionally have problems with it too but I upgraded to the newest version about 2 weeks ago and haven't had any more problems. When was the last time you upgraded it?

Problem solved after third chat session with Earthlink, and it wasn't the modem.
