  • Prisco's Quarterly Awards (Eagle Love)

MVP: McNabb has been sensational. There's no other way to describe it. He is the clear leader in this category.
Runners-up: Bears QB Rex Grossman; Colts QB Peyton Manning.

Offensive Player of the Quarter: McNabb. Sometimes this is different than the MVP. Not this time. He deserves this, too.
Runners-up: Grossman; Rams RB Steven Jackson; 49ers RB Frank Gore.

    Bailey (AP)
Defensive Player of the Quarter: It was a tough choice between Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers and Denver Broncos corner Champ Bailey. Since the Broncos have the better defense, I'll go with Bailey, the truest shutdown corner in the game.
Runners-up: Peppers; Ravens LB Bart Scott; Eagles DE Trent Cole; Broncos MLB Al Wilson; Chargers DT Jamal Williams; Chargers LB Shawne Merriman; Bears DT Tommie Harris.

    Colston (AP)
Offensive Rookie of the Quarter: He was a seventh-round pick on an offense that had Reggie Bush, so how was Marques Colston going to get attention? By catching 23 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns for the Saints. What a steal.
Runners-up: Patriots RB Laurence Maroney; Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew; Chargers T Marcus McNeil; Patriots T Ryan O'Callaghan; Colts RB Joseph Addai; Saints RB Reggie Bush; Packers WR Greg Jennings.

    Anderson (AP)
Defensive Rookie of the Quarter: Bears defensive end Mark Anderson, a fifth-round pick out of Alabama, has 5½ sacks to put him a half sack out of the league lead. That's big production for a late-round pick.
Runners-up: Lions LB Ernie Sims; Bills S Donte Whitner; Texans LB Demeco Ryans; Chiefs DE Tamba Hali.

    Brees (AP)
Best offseason pickup: The Saints are 4-1, and quarterback Drew Brees is a big reason. I wasn't sure about his signing, but he has proved to be an effective leader for this young team.
Runners-up: Vikings RB Chester Taylor; Lions QB Jon Kitna; Bears CB Ricky Manning; Jaguars CB Brian Williams; Panthers WR Keyshawn Johnson; Eagles DE Darren Howard.

    Culpepper (AP)
Worst offseason pickup: Since he's on the bench watching, and he struggled when he did play, it has to be Dolphins quarterback Daunte Culpepper. That injury was way too much to overcome in less than a year.
Runners-up: Redskins WR Antwaan Randle El; Cowboys K Mike Vanderjagt; Bengals DT Sam Adams; Seahawks WR Nate Burleson.

    Smith (AP)
Coach of the Quarter: Lovie Smith, Bears. It's easy to overlook the coach of the team that is playing the best, but not here. Smith's team is dominant at 5-0, and he gets the nod over Sean Payton of the Saints.
Runners-up: Payton; Eagles coach Andy Reid; Rams coach Scott Linehan.

Best assistant coach: Ron Turner, Bears offensive coordinator. The Bears are scoring way more points than anyone expected. Turner deserves props for that.
Runners-up: Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips; Rams defensive coordinator Jim Haslett; Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan; Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham.

    Berrian (AP)
Most improved: Bears wide receiver Bernard Berrian has four receptions of 40 yards or longer. He's a deep threat who could be on his way to the Pro Bowl in his third season. He's averaging 21.7 yards per catch after having 28 catches his first two seasons.
Runners-up: Bears QB Rex Grossman; Jaguars WR Reggie Williams; 49ers QB Alex Smith.

    McAllister (AP)
Comeback player: Saints running back Deuce McAllister has 380 yards and is rushing for a 4.8-yard average while returning from major knee surgery. McAllister was lost this summer in all the Bush hype, but he's still a good football player, and he's showing it.
Runners-up: McNabb; Jets QB Chad Pennington; Brees.

Biggest surprise: The Saints are the surprise on the good side. At 4-1, they're atop the NFC South. That's impressive for a first-year coach.
    Runners-up: Grossman; the Rams.

Biggest disappointment: At 1-3, the Steelers are off to a bad start. The defending Super Bowl champs have to get it going or they'll be in big trouble.
Runners-up: Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander; the Bucs; the Dolphins.

Best moment: Ben Roethlisberger making his first start in Week 2. After all he went through, it was good to see him back on the field.

Worst moment: This is the easiest pick of all. There hasn't been anything as bad as Albert Haynesworth stomping on Andre Gurode's head in this league in a long, long time -- if ever. That was despicable.
Runners-up: The T.O. overdose debacle; Trent Green's injury.

Best game: It had to be the Eagles-Cowboys game from Week 5. It had the T.O. drama leading up to it, but it also lived up to the hype. It was a heck of a game.
Runner-up: Colts beating the Jets in Week 4 on two fourth-quarter drives.

Best trend: The speed on defense forcing a lot of blitzing. I love watching teams blitz the quarterback. With so much speed, everybody is doing it.

Worst trend: Bad offensive line play. You can count on one hand the teams that are getting good play from their front five. That has really hurt offensive production.

Runner-up: Quarterbacks throwing for fewer than 200 yards and winning. What's happened to my forward pass?
