"The Eagles knew when they hired Douglas that he wasn’t going to be a long term piece of the front office. They felt it was worth it to have someone like him to help build up the scouting staff. Douglas got to learn a lot from Howie Roseman. He saw the Eagles aggressive approach to free agency, trading and dealing with contracts. You can’t learn that stuff from just anyone. Douglas also got to deal with the media, which is tough on some scouts who are suddenly thrown in front of microphones and cameras. Dealing with fan and media accountability is challenging for even the most intrepid souls.:

I'd say that the Eagles went after Joe because of the experience that he had working for Ozzie Newsome. We all knew that he would be moving on soon when he was hired. About the only thing that he learned from Howie is how to juggle the books. It's more like Howie learned a lot from Joe, at least I hope so anyway.

IMO they taught each other the things they were short of. Hopefully it works well for both parties.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

They sure worked well together along with an owner who has an open checkbook. Jeff, Doug, Joe and Howie all seemed to be on the same page. Basically it was Doug's job to tell Howie what he needed, Joe's job to find the talent and Howie's to sign it. How this change in the organization plays out has yet to be seen. Hopefully Joe left the right pieces in place before he left.
