I wore a tie that short.......in 1973 in HS. We would make triple knots that were the size of your fist. It didn't leave much tie left over. It also allowed you to leave the collar button undone with no chance of getting demerits since noone could see it...

I wore a tie that short in 1973 as well, but my Mom put it on and it fit just right because I was only 5.
