JMac keeping busy during NFL lockout

GRIDIRON GOALS: At least one locally raised NFL player is keeping himself busy and productive during the lockout.

The Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver, Kirkwood's Jeremy Maclin, has bought his mother, Cleo, a house in Brentwood, says his agent, John Caplin of CAA Football.

In other evidence that JMac, the nickname by which he is known, hasn't forgotten his roots, he participated in "Big Marc's Basketball Classic," on Monday. Some of the proceeds from the roundball tournament are being used to support Maclin's first-year charity effort, "JMac's Back to School Packs."

Maclin is buying back-to-school supplies -- and new backpacks -- for dozens of kids in the Kirkwood area, including his home neighborhood of Meacham Park. He plans to expand the effort to New Jersey and Philadelphia. Tournament proceeds are also being used to benefit a charitable effort by the Rams wide receiver, Danario Alexander. Alexander is buying Christmas gifts for five needy area families.

Maclin is also hosting a youth football camp -- his first -- which will be held in Kirkwood from July 18-20. A friend who works with Maclin, Isaiah DeLeon-Mares, said parents shouldn't be alarmed at the camp's $235 price tag because they offer scholarships to cover camp expenses. DeLeon-Mares said Maclin is also expecting to launch his own foundation to support local at-risk youth in the fall.
