Eagles Practice Notes: Injury updates on Brandon Brooks, Ronald Darby, Nigel Bradham, and others

    Here’s what we learned today.

    NFL: Philadelphia Eagles-Training Camp
    Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports
Today marked the sixteenth 2019 Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice. It was a relatively light day (no pads) since it was a 10-10-10 practice. Read on to see what I observed!

    PRACTICE NOTES
    • CARSON WENTZ UPDATE: Wentz didn’t get a ton of work today but he did look pretty good in limited action. Wentz, who has sometimes struggled with his accuracy on touch passes, did a nice job of floating the ball to his intended targets to hit them in stride. Wentz specifically did this with Josh Adams (!) along the sideline, DeSean Jackson along the other sideline, and Mack Hollins deep down the field. (Unfortunately, Jackson and Hollins both dropped their targets. Jackson — who rarely drops the ball — bobbled the pass into Deiondre’ Hall’s hands for a pick. Hollins did a good job of creating separation down the field but he couldn’t finish the play by catching it.)

Wentz also had a real crisp tight window throw to Nelson Agholor on a post. Avonte Maddox didn’t even have terrible coverage as he slightly trailed behind; he just got beat by an excellent throw and catch. Wentz and Agholor hooked up another time in the red zone where Agholor made a real strong catch on the move with his hands extended. (Good to see a guy who previously struggled with drops making those kind of grabs.)

Wentz was almost picked off on a throw to Zach Ertz near the sideline. L.J. Fort made an athletic leaping play to get his hands on it but couldn’t hold on. It looked like Wentz forced the ball there so that might’ve been a series where the defense wanted a certain look and Wentz was just following the practice script. Or it was just a bad force. One of the two.

    • EAGLES INJURY UPDATE
: Decent amount of injury news to catch up on.

Brandon Brooks was recently examined to see if he’s ready for team drills but he’s not there just yet. Brooks has been cleared to do more 1-on-1 and position drill work. Brooks said he’s still optimistic he’ll be ready for Week 1.

Ronald Darby participated in 11-on-11 for the first time this offseason. He didn’t take ALL of the 11-on-11 reps but he did take a good portion of them. Week 1 seems like a realistic possibility for him. Darby lined up as a first team cornerback with Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones splitting time on the outside opposite of him. Avonte Maddox was working in as the nickel cornerback.

Nigel Bradham participated in 7-on-7 for the first time this offseason. Encouraging step forward.

Fletcher Cox was out at practice once again after being inside last week. Still not doing any team drills, though.

Josh Sweat missed practice with a knee injury. The Eagles are saying he’s “day-to-day.” Knee issues have been an issue for Sweat dating back to college, so this isn’t the best development for him.

Richard Rodgers returned to practice after missing a couple weeks with a foot injury.

Hassan Ridgeway returned to practice after recovering from a concussion he suffered in the first preseason game.

Cody Kessler and Nate Sudfeld were spectators at practice.

Paul Worrilow wasn’t seen at practice. [UPDATE: The Eagles released Worrilow.]

    • JOSH MCCOWN UPDATE: The new QB didn’t practice much. He got some sparse snaps in during 7-on-7 but that was it. Clearly still learning the system after only signing with the Eagles on Saturday. In case you didn’t already know, McCown is wearing No. 18. He’s only the second ever Eagles quarterback to wear that jersey number. Can you name the first without looking it up (or having seen my tweet about it already)?

    • Clayton Thorson took a majority of the quarterback reps. He made what was arguably his best throw of the summer by throwing a nice tight spiral deep to DeAndre Thompkins in stride for a touchdown. The rookie’s deep attempts are usually wobbly so that was nice to see. Thorson also threw a jump ball touchdown to Carlton Agudosi in red zone drills. Lastly on the positive side, Thorson showed respectable mobility on a designed run towards the sideline. He’s no Mike Vick out there but he’s hardly the slowest quarterback I’ve ever seen.

Thorson still had plenty of bad moments. A 40+ yard deep attempt to Marken Michel was way overthrown as the ball wobbled in the air. Thorson also overthrew Alex Ellis on an attempt towards the sideline. Thorson’s regularly struggled with his accuracy on those throws.

    • Doug Pederson and Corey Clement were working an elaborate handshake/fist pound celebration that they later broke out in practice. There was a pouring motion involved, I believe?

Much more notably, Clement took some first team running back reps in the red zone. I don’t buy any talk of him getting cut.

    • Zach Berman astutely noticed that Nate Herbig — and not Stefen Wisniewski — was taking second team center reps. Wis was at guard instead. Wis has been really struggling with snapping the ball, so this development isn’t a total shock. But Herbig — an undrafted rookie free agent — had zero experience snapping the ball coming into training camp and now he’s suddenly supplanted an experienced NFL veteran in Wis. Barring more injuries, I really don’t think Wis is making this roster. He’s not as valuable to the team if they can’t trust him to play center in addition to guard.

    • Brandon Graham beat Malcolm Jenkins to the ball as they raced towards it at the start of team drills. Unlike some of their other races, this was actually a fair fight.

    • New Eagles offensive lineman Brett Toth is wearing No. 66.
