        NY Daily News Reporting:

        http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/ba...nkees_sox.html

To land Halladay, Boston would likely have to give up Clay Buchholz, the organization's top young pitcher, as well as Casey Kelly, the pitcher/shortstop who signed with the Red Sox in 2008 after being recruited by Tennessee to play quarterback. Red Sox GM Theo Epstein is said to be smitten with Kelly, which could be a sticking point in talks with Toronto if Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos insists on the 20-year-old being included in a deal.

The Yankees would love to acquire Halladay, although Cashman has been reluctant to deal away top prospects such as Austin Jackson and Jesus Montero for a player he would then have to sign for more than $100 million, such as Halladay. Toronto would also likely require either Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain in a deal.

Other teams figure to be involved in the Halladay mix, including the Angels, who reportedly have stepped up their efforts this week as they prepare for the possibility that John Lackey will sign elsewhere.

                  From MLBTraderumors:

Roy Halladay "will not approve any proposed deal after he reports to spring training," ESPN's Buster Olney learned from his representatives. The goal is to avoid a media frenzy during the season.

"The Mariners are showing strong interest in free agent starter Rich Harden, two major league sources told FOXSports.com. It's not known where Harden ranks relative to John Lackey on Seattle's free agent wish list. But the franchise's location in the Pacific Northwest — a hindrance in some previous offseason pursuits — could help the Mariners with Harden, a native of nearby Victoria, British Columbia. Seattle has competition from the well-heeled Red Sox and other clubs. One source said Tuesday that Boston is serious about pursuing Harden. The market for Harden could move relatively quickly, since the Cubs didn't offer him salary arbitration before Tuesday's deadline.

Mark DeRosa remains one of the more popular free agents. The Giants have been surprisingly aggressive, according to one source, and the Phillies and Cardinals maintain interest. And don't rule out the Yankees

Yankees working on 3-way Granderson trade

                            December 8 New York Post

                            Share Article
"The Yankees' effort to acquire center fielder Curtis Granderson from Detroit intensified yesterday when Arizona joined the process.

Two club sources said the Yankees spent the first day of the Winter Meetings talking to the Tigers and Diamondbacks about the possible blockbuster deal.
According to a Foxsports.com report later confirmed by The Post, the teams discussed a three-way trade that would bring Granderson to The Bronx, send pitcher Edwin Jackson from Detroit and Ian Kennedy from the Yankees to Arizona, and the Tigers would receive right-hander Max Scherzer from Arizona as well outfield prospect Austin Jackson, and left-handed relievers Mike Dunn and Phil Coke from the Yankees. "They are on Granderson, not [Edwin] Jackson," said a source familiar with the Yankees' plan.

According to another source, the deal wasn't close to being completed late last night because the Tigers or Yankees weren't comfortable with the parameters. The Diamondbacks like the trade as is.

Earlier in the day, a high-ranking Tigers official said the club wasn't moving Granderson, but would listen on Jackson. So it could be the Tigers stalling the three-way action.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman didn't respond to several questions last night.
If Granderson, who batted .249 with 30 homers and 71 RBIs last year, comes to the Yankees, he upgrades the middle of their outfield. It also might lead the Yankees to walk away from Johnny Damon and play Melky Cabrera in left.
"It would be nice if it all happened quickly, but when that happens you are making some bad choices," Cashman said when asked about making moves before news of the three-way deal broke. While the Yankees didn't alter their roster outside of dealing reliever Brian Bruney to Washington for the first pick in the Rule 5 draft, Cashman was active on other fronts.

-Gotta wonder what this trade would mean for the Yanks interest in Halladay. They'd be giving up some prospects in this deal and a Halladay trade would certainly demand more prospects. Just how deep is their minor league system?

This is the first Blanton trade rumor I've heard.Let's hope it's not the case. Joe was the most consistent pitcher we had last year and the number of innings he eats up sure helps the bullpen stay fresh. losing him could really tax the pen.

Dealing Blanton could provide payroll flexibility

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ruben Amaro Jr. and his top lieutenant, Scott Proefrock, stepped into an elevator at the Marriott and headed across the street for what they described as a "trade meeting" with another team.

It wasn't the only such appointment the Phillies' executives had Monday.
As the winter meetings opened in snowy Indianapolis, Amaro didn't necessarily want to engage in trade talks. But the Phillies have specific needs -- bolstering the bullpen and adding depth to the starting rotation -- and little payroll flexibility. Asked if he will be able to achieve that agenda without raising the payroll, Amaro said, "If we're smart enough."
For the Phillies, being smart means getting creative. So, several sources confirmed they have told teams they may consider dealing right-hander Joe Blanton for a quality late-inning reliever or a less expensive starter who could help free money to acquire a free agent reliever.
And the Phillies' need to find another reliever has increased given that Brad Lidge and J.C. Romero may miss part of spring training while recovering from offseason elbow surgery.
"I don't want to mess with our rotation as it stands, but that doesn't mean we have to make it a hard and fast rule," said Amaro, who wouldn't comment specifically about Blanton. "It's like robbing Peter to pay Paul, but if you think Paul is better than Peter, it's worth it. To me, it's more about keeping our options as open as possible."
Amaro also believes the Phillies have a strong rotation, and Blanton, who posted a 2.78 ERA over a 21-start span, logged 1951¼3 innings and finished with 12 wins in 31 starts last season, is an integral piece. But he also could fetch approximately $7 million through salary arbitration, and is due to be a free agent after the 2010 season.
Ideally, the Phillies would leave the rotation intact and turn to the free agent market to satisfy their need for a seventh- or eighth-inning reliever with experience as a closer. But their top choice, right-hander Brandon Lyon, made $4.5 million last season with the Tigers and is seeking both an annual raise and a multiyear contract.
