Eagles training camp recap: Rodney McLeod gets back to making plays, Josh Hawkins has strong day | 5 takeaways

PHILADELPHIA -- The Eagles hosted their 11th training camp practice on Tuesday at NovaCare Complex. The practice was the team’s final session before Thursday’s preseason home opener against the Tennessee Titans at Lincoln Financial Field.

Here are five takeaways and a handful of quick observations from the Eagles’ 11th training camp practice:

    1. Rodney McLeod starts making plays

Eagles starting free safety Rodney McLeod was eased back into team drills this week. Coming off major knee surgery, McLeod took some time to return to the field during the offseason program.

After taking part in individual drills during the first week of camp, McLeod was able to expand his workload, playing in “non-contact” 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills.

The Philadelphia Eagles had their last practice before the start of the preseason and quarterback Carson Wentz connected with DeSean Jackson for another deep ball.

The veteran defensive back produced the only interception during Tuesday’s practice. During 11-on-11 drills, quarterback Carson Wentz overthrew a pass to DeSean Jackson near the sideline. McLeod made a tippy toe catch inbounds for the interception.

It was a nice showing from McLeod, who has been missed in the secondary since he injured his knee in Week 3 of last season. He is aiming for a preseason return with his sights set on a Week 1 start.

    2. Josh Hawkins continues to stand out

McLeod wasn’t the only defensive back with a strong practice on Tuesday. Within the first hour of practice, cornerback Josh Hawkins produced three pass breakups. Throughout camp, Hawkins has had at least one pass breakup in every practice.

Hawkins has the ability to square up against bigger receivers, as he has done well against J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and Carlton Agudosi. He may be on the outside looking in for a roster spot in Philadelphia but he could latch on somewhere else he stands out in the preseason.

    3. Clayton Thorson has his best day of camp

Rookie quarterback Clayton Thorson has been a bit of a punchline for the media so far. The fifth-round pick was noticeably inaccurate throughout the first 10 practices of camp.

However, on the 11th day, Thorson made some nice throws. His best throw of camp was produced during 7-on-7 drills. He launched a deep throw to wide receiver Greg Ward Jr., who caught ball in stride for a touchdown. Thorson also made a pair of nice midrange throws to receives on the run.

This session doesn’t make up for earlier blunders, but it was a step in the right direction.

    4. Play of the Day

Wentz started off hot on Tuesday. The quarterback connected with Jackson on a 50-yard strike down the field for a touchdown. Jackson separated from cornerback Rasul Douglas and Wentz hurled the deep shot with perfect accuracy.

Jackson and Wentz have a connection that’s been written about a lot. The hype is very, very real.

    5. Eagles officially end Joe Ostman’s season

The Eagles placed defensive end Joe Ostman on injured reserve before practice. The former practice-squad standout suffered a torn left ACL during Sunday’s night practice, according to a league source.

By placing him on injured reserve now, Ostman is ineligible to return this season. That said, an ACL injury would have kept him out of action regardless of his designation.

The team signed defensive end Kasim Edebali to replace Ostman. The journeyman pass rusher wore No. 66 during his first Eagles practice. Edebali has played for seven different teams since going undrafted in 2014.

Edebali produced 54 tackles, eight sacks and three pass breakups in 48 games with the New Orleans Saints during the first three years of his career.

The Boston College alum will take on third-team snaps during the Eagles’ matchup against the Titans.

    Quick Hits

    - Backup lineman Anthony Fabiano received some reps with the starting offensive line at left guard.

    - Center Jason Kelce and wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, who were both given the day off on Monday, returned to practice in a full capacity.

    - The Eagles waived/injured offensive tackle Casey Tucker (concussion) in order to sign cornerback Ajene Harris. Harris wore No. 33 during his practice debut.

If Tucker passes through waivers unclaimed, he will revert to the Eagles’ injured reserve list.

    - Cornerback Sidney Jones lined up on the outside during 11-on-11 drills. He had been working at the nickel cornerback spot throughout most of the week. Following practice, Jones stayed on the field to work on his press technique. He also worked with wide receiver Nelson Agholor on his coverage technique.

    - Safety Blake Countess made a nice play on a bad-decision throw by backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld. Sudfeld heaved a pass to the end zone to Arcega-Whiteside -- who was in double coverage -- and Countess broke up the pass to prevent a touchdown. Countess also appears to be the top personal protector on the team’s punt coverage unit.

    - The injury list remained the same. Running back Boston Scott (ankle), wide receiver Shelton Gibson (ankle), linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill (knee), cornerbacks Jalen Mills (foot, PUP) and Cre’Von LeBlanc (foot), linebacker Paul Worrilow (knee) and tight end Richard Rodgers (foot) all continued to be sidelined. Wide receiver Mack Hollins (hip) wore a helmet during practice and worked on his hands following the session.
