Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz has been cleared to return to practice this week as the team prepares to play the Atlanta Falcons, according to a report from Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com. While Ertz has been cleared to return, it does not necessarily guarantee he will practice this week. More from ESP:

"While the Eagles do not hit during practice, Ertz is not expected to have any restrictions. Ertz being cleared does not guarantee he will practice, as head coach Chip Kelly has always been very conservative in handling players returning from injury. The doctors, however, have cleared Ertz."

Ertz underwent successful surgery to repair a core muscle injury on Aug. 14. The tight end originally suffered the injury during a training camp practice and has sat out of all football activities since then.

While it's unclear if he will practice this week and/or play against the Falcons, it's obviously at least a good sign for the team that Ertz has been cleared to return. Ertz was having a good training camp prior to being injured. He figures to be a key weapon in Philadelphia's passing attack.

Whether Ertz can play or not, the Eagles will still be relying on veteran Brent Celek to some extent due to his blocking ability. If Ertz is out, however, the team might call on second-year tight end Trey Burton to step up in the offense.

The Eagles return to practice tomorrow on Wednesday. It will be interesting to see to what extent Ertz is practicing, if at all. Keep in mind the Eagles don't play the Falcons until Monday, Sept. 14.

I'm glad for the extra day to prepare for him. However, I have a hard time believing that Ertz will play, let alone be anywhaere near his potential for this matchup with the Falcons. I abso, ute,y want him for week two.

If there is any question I would hope they keep him out to make sure he is 100% going forward. I think Ertz can become a special TE but I can easily live with Celek and Burton. Both are among the better TEs
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
      Hope is not a strategy

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Expectations For Ertz

Ertz injury typically involves 4-to-6 week recovery.

By Tim McManus | September 9, 2015 at 6:00 am

One day after undergoing surgery to address a rather significant groin injury, Zach Ertz walked a mile and got in a yoga session. The intensity has steadily ratcheted up from there. Since going under the knife on August 14, the third-year tight end has been pushing hard to get back on the field. That work has paid off, as there is optimism that he will return to practice this week.

Whether he plays against the Falcons is less of a sure bet.

Chip Kelly established an ambitious recovery timeline when he told reporters on the day of the surgery that he thought Ertz would be back for Week 1. Ertz will be a touch over four weeks removed from the procedure come Monday night. Typically, it takes four-to-six weeks to return from this type of injury. While the Atlanta game is within that timeframe, it also would be perfectly normal if he waited until Week 2 against Dallas or even Week 3 against the Jets to suit up.

Logic suggests that the Eagles might want to err on the conservative side here. This groin injury has been nagging Ertz for some time, and it makes sense to ensure he's fully healed before putting him back out there. For both this season and beyond, there is a bigger picture to consider when it comes to the 24-year-old.

It won't be easy to convince Ertz of this. He's said to be aggressively attacking his rehab and has his sights set on a quick comeback. He only needs to look at Jason Kelce's efforts from a year ago for proof that it's possible. The center returned to action five weeks after a sports hernia surgery that can take up to two months to recover from. However, he was never quite right. Kelce admirably played out the final nine games of the regular season but was far from 100 percent and never rounded into full form.

Ertz is a valuable piece on offense, but the Eagles aren't in a position where they need to rush things. It's early in the year, and Brent Celek and Trey Burton should be able to hold down the tight end position for a game or two. While Kelly would love to have him in Atlanta and Ertz will fight to make that happen, it may be best for all parties to slow-play this one.

It doesn't sound good for Zack or Smith

The Philadelphia Eagles released their first official injury report in preparation of their Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football.

Zach Ertz was limited in practice on Thursday. The tight end is still recovering from surgery on his groin. Ertz expects to be a game-time decision for Monday night. It seems like he's eager to play. If Ertz can't play, Trey Burton will need to step up at tight end.

Second-year outside linebacker Marcus Smith was also limited. He's recovering from a hamstring injury suffered during training camp. Smith expects to be 100% by Week 2, but it's unclear if he will play against the Falcons. If Smith can't play, some combination of Vinny Curry, Bryan Braman, and/or Brad Jones could see snaps at outside linebacker.

No other Eagles players were missing from practice. Philadelphia is relatively healthy heading into Week 1.
