Eagles reportedly restructure Zach Ertz’s contract to save over $5.7 million

What’s Howie Roseman got up his sleeves?

The Philadelphia Eagles and Zach Ertz have agreed on a restructured contract, according to a report from ESPN’s Field Yates. The new deal reportedly opens up $5.756M in cap space for 2019.

Prior to Ertz’s restructured contract, Over The Cap had the Eagles with $21,764,518 in cap room. This new developmental gives the Eagles over $27.5 million to work with. That’s good for the ninth most cap space in the league, according to Over The Cap.

To be clear, Ertz is NOT taking a pay cut. The Eagles are just moving money around.

The upside to restructuring contracts is that it frees up cap space in the short-term. The downside is that it increases cap numbers in future seasons. It’s a classic example of kicking the can down the road.

The Eagles haven’t been shy to restructure contracts this offseason. It remains to be seen exactly what they’re planning to do with all that money. Are they gearing up for a Carson Wentz contract extension? Do they just want to have the money available in case an unexpected opportunity turns up? Are they gearing up for making some post-May 7 free agency signings since the compensatory pick formula is no longer in effect at that point?

    We’ll see.

Yea the obvious answer is a Wentz extension but you just don't know what Howie might do. Kicking the can down the road though, their words, should be a concern I would think. But, it is all hocus pocus with funny money it seems
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
      Hope is not a strategy

Kicking the can down the road just seems like common sense because the salary cap increases every year. The guys we have renegotiated with are all young and are in their prime. For the other guys, as long as we can get out of contracts and don’t have dead money, who cares?
Who knows what a new CBA will do to the cap also?

I think its more than the Wentz extension. Still some really good football players available on the FA market. (Ziggy Ansah, Mo Wilkinson, Jamie Collins, Suh, Nick Perry, Zac Brown, Danny Shelton) to name a few. I think after May 7th when the FA don't count towards the comp formula anymore you will see movement.

There is one other thing that always can happen with Howie and that is a trade . I am keeping my eye on Seattle, they don't have a ton of money under the cap, they are trying to resign Russell Wilson, they may trade Frank Clark or Bobby Wagner etc.
Were from Philly F in Philly no one likes us we DON'T CARE!

It could be anything obviously but I really think that it's Wentz related. The road is endless from what I see. They just keep rewriting contracts and extending them and must have the software available that as long as Luri goes along with the money Howie has a bottomless pit. Jeff has gone from one of the most frugal to possibly the most extravagant owner in the league now. He's the new DeBartolo when the mob ran the team and he treated his players like royalty and nobody else could figure out the cap or even dared to question it. The NFL didn't even punish him until he was too blatant and they had no choice but to kick him out with the floating casino he bought. A couple of years later they fined the team after he was gone. They couldn't take the SBs away from him though but all of that is a different story.

Jeff may not have been intentionally frugal but he and Banner had no clues as to how the cap worked and won that Lombardi Award every year but never could figure out how to cash in on it until Howie came along.

Once they see what they get via the draft, they might grab someone like Suh if they don't hit on one of the many studs. He's shown enough in the past 2 seasons that I will trust him. I also expect Wentz to get done at some point
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

There's so many options and we all know that Howie hates to stay put on draft day. They also have sent so many mixed messages as usual so it's anybody's guess. Luri has said that they want to hold onto as many draft picks as they can because they need cheap labor and Howie has said that he wants difference makers indicating that he wants to move up like he has a history of doing. Heck, you might as well plan on watching from pick 5 on down with this one.

This is my belief also. Get it done now, before the CBA expires (2020? 2021?)
