We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.
Also Mark Hendrickson (U-W) and Ryan Minor (OK), two college basketball stars who were both 2nd round draft picks of the Sixers, and left the NBA to pursue careers in MLB.
Ryan Minor's claim to fame was, i believe, being the player that played 3B for the Orioles the first game after Ripkin's streak ended.
Hendrickson is still pitching in the big leagues, i think for Tampa Bay.
Gene Conley a 6'9"+ pitcher/center who was a contender for rookie of the year, won in double digits in Milwaukee, Philly and Boston. He was also a decent Center and was Bill Russell's back-up for those championship Celtics. You can look it up but he once was famous for brawling with little Billy Martin on the field. I only hated him because he came in the trade that sent away my good old Stosh Lopata.
