  • Fantasy football - how much luck and how much 'skill'

Larry Johnson undrafted free agent week 3 last year.
Peerless Price in the second round.
Terrell Owens benched for half a season.
A relatively quiet defense exploding for 3 freak touchdowns.
Your stud goes off for 3 touchdowns...and theirs gets 4.
Your backup rb that you did the homework on hits it big.
    etc etc

How much of fantasy football is luck?
    How much is skill?

Five straight losses, including a crucial one at Dallas on Christmas Day, send them out against Atlanta, needing the win, plus help. -Dr. Z, 8/31/06

You're missing my favorite (which applied to my brother pretty much every game last year):

    My bench outscores my starters.

Luck is so much a part of head to head leagues.

Like you'll score 80 pts one week but win your game and then score 120 pts and lose your game. Meanwhile, the guy who scores 90 pts goes up against someone who lost their RB to an injury on the first play of the game and wins.

      I say 70 luck / 30 skill

There certainly is skill when drafting a team, and some skill when choosing your starters; but it's mostly luck after that due to injuries, match-ups, and freak performances.

Here's luck: in 2003 someone in my league was on autopick.

They landed Jamal Lewis, LT, Randy Moss, and Torry Holt. I'm still not sure how this was accomplished. Naturally each player went on to have the best year of their respective careers.
"You come into our house, you should get your behind kicked. You don't come into the OB playin that stuff. You're across the ocean over there. You're across the city. You can't come over to our place talkin' trash like that."

I'm increasing my luck %. Injuries are just killing my team.

Skill tells you that Priest Holmes is injury prone and LJ will perform when called upon.

Skill tells you that Price is garbage and Vick is a horrible QB.

Skill tells you that T.O. has a history of injury and a history of doing crazy things.
