  • Favorite hip hop albums

I think nyc_eagle put up a list like this in the "Greatest albums ever" thread, but I'd like to humor 50 Cent's thread by having a separate space to reminisce over great rap records. My random top ten of the moment:

    Schoolly D - Schoolly D
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
    cLOUDDEAD - cLOUDDEAD
    Anti-pop Consortium - Arrythmia
De La Soul - 3 feet High and rising
    EPMD - Strictly Business
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
3rd Bass - The Cactus Album
The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Eric B. and Rakim - Paid in Full

Probably shows my biases and history with rap. I was heavily into it as a kid/teenager, loved all the classics, got disgusted with the mainstreaming and endless critical praise of the Puff/Biggie/TuPac thing by the mid 90's, and am now slowly getting back into the more eclectic new stuff and figuring out what I missed or overlooked from the 90's (I'm finally beginning to appreciate the Wu Tang clan, for example, though I'd still not put any single album up there as a classic).

    Thoughts?

    You're missing some classics indeed.

    1) Illmatic - Nas (just the best rap album of all time... not even close in my book.)
    2) It Takes a Nation of Millions - PE
    3) Fear of a Black Planet - PE
    4) Don't Sweat the Technique - Eric B and Rakim
    5) Straight Outta Compton - NWA
    6) Dead or Alive - Kool G Rap and DJ Polo
    7) The W - Wu Tang Clan
The Devil Made me Do It - Paris
    9) Unfinished Business - EPMD
    10) Naughty by Nature - Naughty by Nature

The PE stuff is all good IMO...just an amazing run of talent...

The De La Soul album was a classic..and Straight out of Compton is mandatory music in my book even though I do not believe Ice Cube has done anything better since unfortunately...and yes that most definitely includes his movie work...

I tended toward more Ice T..Power and Original Gangster were good albums IMO and I liked and saw live Body Count...definitely love Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation Of album...and even got into bands like The Brand New Heavies...

I thought Ice Cube's best effort was Amerikkka's most wanted.

To each his own. I got into Predator before I bought Amerikkka. That's why I like Fear of a Black Planet better than Nation of Millions. I know deep down that Nation from beginning to the end is better, but I'll always like Planet more.

I agree that Cube peaked on his first solo album(AmeriKKKa), but Predator was great because the whole album was dedicated to the LAPD after Rodney King's beating, and subsequent riots.

Vin goes right for the Kool G Rap, nice.

              My list:

              Tribe - Midnight Marauders
              Digable Planets - Blowout Comb
              Nas - Illmatic
Pete Rock and CL Smooth - The Main Ingredient
The Roots - Do You Want More?!!!??!
              Outkast - Aquemini
              Outkast - Southernlayallisticadillacmusic
              Dr Dre - The Chronic

I always loved the whole NWA - Eazy E - Ice Cube - Dr Dre thing, but only the Chronic is deserving of this list, although I thing Cube had the best career of all of them.

I have to leave but I want in on this. NAS - Illmatic and Tribe Called Quest LET were both sick.

Do not leave off Black Sheep / The Goats or still what I allow in my CD player Slick Rick the Ruler...Special Ed - I'm the Magnificent...damn you got me reminiscing. What happened to the classics? Now you got just garbage.

Kool G Rap is the most underrated rapper in the history of hip hop.

Special Ed! That was one of the first rap tapes I ever bought. It was fun to listen to but then I discovered Public Enemy and it blew my mind.

Oh, I left of Big Daddy Kane but he was one of the best too.

I know he's grown very tired these days, but I used to listen to Too Short. Life is... and Short Dogg's in the House were always within reach in the truck.

Good call on the Slick Rick. Run DMC is an obvious omission from this list. Their body of work is better than any individual album. King of Rock will still get me going at a moment's notice.

Sorry for ommiting Run DMC who definitely deserve a place....

As do the Beastie Boys who I still love...Paul's Boutigue, Licensed to Ill and Check your Head are all classics IMO...

I agree with the Beastie Boys addition. Although they definitely blur the classification line, they got skills. They haven't put out a bad album yet.

Good call on the Mobb Deep and the Pharcyde. I almost put Labcabincalifornia on my list, but most of my favorite tracks were on Bizarre Ride.
