  • PDN's Eagles midseason report card

Agree with a lot of it, including Reid. I probably would've given him a D, but yeah, F makes the point plenty well.

    Eagles Report Card
    by Les Bowen
    GRADES

QUARTERBACK: A. A couple of rough weeks and bad decisions don't erase an exceptional start by Donovan McNabb.

RUNNING BACK: B. You can't blame Brian Westbrook or Correll Buckhalter for unwillingness to call running plays.

OFFENSIVE LINE: B. Grade would have been higher a few weeks ago.

WIDE RECEIVERS: B. Way too many drops, not enough success over the middle and on short routes, not enough battles for the ball won.

TIGHT ENDS: C+. L.J. Smith needs to step it up. He and Matt Schobel need to pick up the blocking.

DEFENSIVE LINE: C. Most disappointing unit during the three-game losing streak.

LINEBACKERS: C. Teams seem to be game-planning to fool Jeremiah Trotter, and sometimes, he's out there by himself.

SECONDARY: C-. Healthy corners should improve this grade in the second half. Strong safety is a big concern.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C-. Coverage has really started to slip, return game has been consistently pedestrian. David Akers isn't getting enough field goal work. Dirk Johnson has been disappointing.

COACHING: F: When your team loses three games it should have won, dominating the foe in two of them, then loses a fourth by getting smacked around its own stadium, this is where poultry settles down for the night. Bad penalties, turnovers, botched time management, the lack of a commitment to the running game - did we leave anything out?
"Philly fans are great....It's the only place where you pull up on the bus and you've got the grandfather, the grandmother, the kids and the grandkids - everybody flicking you off. At other stadiums, they give you the thumbs-down. Here, they give you the middle finger.”
    — Michael Strahan

"No one likes us, no one likes us, no one likes us, we don’t care, we’re from Philly, F—-ing Philly, No one likes us, we don’t care!”

QUARTERBACK: A-. The "minus" is for the end of the half against Tampa.

RUNNING BACK: B-. Not strong enough to muscle out the extra 1/2 yards on 3rd and short. I know that others will disagree. But, all of our backs are pretty easy to tackle unless it is in the open field.

    OFFENSIVE LINE: B. Agree.

WIDE RECEIVERS: C. No way I give a B with all the drops.

TIGHT ENDS: C+. Some drops (mostly Shoebel) and blocking issues. LJ has made some really nice catches at times though.

DEFENSIVE LINE: C. This was an 'A' with Kearse the first 2 games. Howard is probably the one getting double-teamed now. We miss the Freak's presence.

LINEBACKERS: C-. Uggh ? Still, things would be absolutely dismal if we did not have Trotter to help with the run.

    SECONDARY: C-. Agree

    SPECIAL TEAMS: C-. Agree

COACHING: C-: (D-defense, B-offense) IMHO, most of the problems have been staying aggressive on defense. We still have the #1 offense regardless of any arguments regarding the lack of a ball control offense, etc. The penalties and dropped passes have just killed this team. These are player mistakes. Yes, the clock management is on the coaching though.

Quarterback: B+ He single-handedly lost the Tampa game and he is making some mind boggingly dump plays at the end of the half or at the end of games. This was an A two games ago but he has been poor the last two games. Holding onto the ball too long lately.

Running back: C+ Unable to get the tough yards. Fullback can't block still. No one else stepping up but Westy, and a lot of fumbles.

      Offensive Line: B Agree

Wide Receivers: B With Avant, Baskett, and Stallworth, a lot of guys new to the system. Other than the JAX game, they haven't really been why we lost. Yes, I know, drops here and there. But they've scored a lot of touchdowns so far.

Tight Ends: C LJ and Schobel can't block, and both drop their share of passes.

Defensive Line: C No excuse for being run on the way they are. No excuse for "wearing down" when you're being rotated. Not enough pass rush. Only Cole has really played well.

Linebackers: D- Can't stop the run, can't get off blocks, can't stop the TE's, and can't tackle QB's on QB scrambles. Perhaps the worst in the league, and no depth.

Secondary: C Lito and Sheldon have played OK, but the secondary as a whole can't get off the field on 3rd down. Trouble with bigger receivers. Michael Lewis has been atrocious, and Dawk has been too quiet.

Special Teams: C Coverage for the most part has been OK, but we have gotten nothing from our kick return game. Punt returns OK.

COACHING: D- What does Reid need to get it through his thick head that we HAVE to run the ball??? No commitment to the run. We knew that in the offseason and they never addressed it with a fullback or blocking TE. Jim Johnson seems to be losing it and doesn't come up with creative game plans anymore. Can't get off the field on 3rd down. We've been getting hammered at the start of games with scripted plays.

QUARTERBACK: A-. The "minus" is for the last two weeks where he has not been superman

RUNNING BACK: C. Not a very strong running team the backups suck

OFFENSIVE LINE: B. Too many sacks giving up this year but still as a whole they have played wekk enough

WIDE RECEIVERS: C. Too man drops, last two weeks having problems getting open. Don't come back to teh ball

TIGHT ENDS: C+. Too many drops and they don't block partically well

DEFENSIVE LINE: B. Can pass rush with the best of them, don't hold up well against the run. Were better with Kearse

LINEBACKERS: D. Really have been exposed in both the run and pass game

SECONDARY: C. Injuries play a part in this.

SPECIAL TEAMS: D. Too many return yards on kickoffs, bone headed punt return play.

COACHING: D: (D-defense, B-offense, Special Teams D) Too many mistakes, no commitment to running the ball or stopping the run, too many pentalties, failed opportunites to adjust.
Were from Philly F in Philly no one likes us we DON'T CARE!

Quarterback: (B+) MVP-like start, running the offense very well, leading squad to #1 offense in the NFL, using his mobility well. Made some mental mistakes, too aggressive nature backfired several times, some unusual INT and holding the ball too long leading to sacks...

Running back: (B-) Westy has played very well besides pass drops and knee injury, Bucky and Moats not given enough chances to have much impact, but good that Bucky is healthy and productive when asked to run...Tapeh started well, got his 1st TD of his career and has blocked better than expected, but with lack of focus on running game his role has lessened. Mahe struggled thru injury, but hs not done much on ST.

Offensive Line: (B-) Again, dominant start, biggest OL we have ever had and talent throughout...bye comes at the right time, they look tired and a bit lost in their assignments...too many penalties and not enough of a push recently for run game. Pass pro has been good, but blitz pickup has been poor last few weeks.

Wide Receivers: (B-) Better than expected from Brown, GLew, but mixed bag for Stallworth, Baskett and Avant. The last two are rooks and should not be expected to always be consistent this quickly, but the injury issue with Stallworth has hurt us. Brown has stepped up despite some drops and looks poised to be a very good WR. GLew has several TD and is back in a role he is comfortable with.

Tight Ends: (C+) LJ is off to another very good start in the pass game and Schobel has had some big plays too. Both are inconsistent blockers, some good, some bad..and especially Schobel has had too many drops...

Defensive Line: (B-) Another unit that started red hot and has cooled over the last few weeks...bye week comes at the right time for them s well...last game they got dominated for first time; several other games they have dominated the OL. We miss Kearse, have not gotten much out of Bunkley, Rayburn or Ramsey; Howard is nicked up.

Linebackers: (C) McCoy going through the normal 1st year starting cycle...started off gang busters and now has slowed down and is being picked on a bit in the run game...all LB need to get off blocks better and fill holes quicker in coordination with DL...Trot is showing his age a bit and the lack of DL pressure hurts him...Jones had one of his better games against JAX IMO and has been better than 2005, but not as good as 2004 so far...depth is an issue.

Secondary: (C+) Lito has been quite good after returning from injury; Brown has been inconsistent, but generally ok; Hood/Lito's injuries hurt us, using Wynn and Hanson exposed us to some big plays...Lewis has been burned alot and Considine, while good vs. the pass, is not as good vs. the run. Dawk showing his age a bit and seems to struggle getting to the QB on his blitzes now...either the QB is unloading it quickly or the protection blocks Dawk off...

Special Teams: (D+) Coverage started off well, but has dropped off along with Dirk's punting, Akers' kickoffs and our return game...we need better return personnel, we need Dirk and Akers to return to form, we need the coverage to get back on track and we need to win the FG battle consistently...

COACHING: (B-) Marty has been an improvement over the game calling last year and the game planning and prep has remained pretty consistently good despite being dominated by JAX...that was mostly poor execution and sloppy plays IMO...there does need to be more focus on running the ball while continuing to excel via the pass...there does need to be more correct in-game adjustments to attack the opponent where they are vulnerable. Same is true for JJ. Harbaugh I give more space to since most of our ST issues are personnel and execution-driven IMO.
Eliminate distractions, create energy, fear nothing, and attack everything.
