Detailing Javon Hargrave’s 3-year contract with the Eagles

The Eagles got off to a slow start in free agency this week, but they did land one major prize when they agreed to terms with defensive lineman Javon Hargrave from the Steelers.
Coming into this offseason, the Eagles prioritized getting a younger free agent they could sign to a multi-year deal. They found that in Hargrave.
Hargrave, 27, agreed to a three-year deal worth $39 million, according to a league source. The first two years of the contract are guaranteed, a total of $26 million, $11.75M of that coming immediately from his signing bonus.
While the Eagles love Hargrave, they will have a potential out after the 2021 season that would basically turn this into a two-year, $26 million deal if they cut him before the 2022 season. That would leave just under $4 million in dead cap money for 2022 and save the Eagles $13 million in cap space.
In the first year of his contract, Hargrave will have a salary cap hit of $5.17 million but that figure will rise for 2021-22.
In addition to Hargrave’s signing bonus, he also has workout bonuses of $250K in each year of the deal.
Here’s how the contract breaks down over the three years:
2020: $1M base salary — $5.17M cap hit
2021: $12.75M base salary — $16.92M cap hit
2022: $12.75M base salary — $16.92M cap hit
The Eagles already had significant money invested in their defensive line and that total only increased when they landed Hargrave. While Hargrave’s cap number isn’t high this upcoming season, it does jump significantly in 2021-22. Similarly, Malik Jackson’s cap hit jumps from $4.56M this season to $13.61M next season.
So in 2021, the defensive tackle trio of Fletcher Cox ($22.45M), Hargrave ($16.92M) and Jackson ($13.61M) will combine for a cap hit of over $52.97 million unless there are some restructures or a cut. To put that into perspective, the league salary cap this year is just under $200 million.
If the Eagles want to cut Jackson after this upcoming season with a post-June 1 designation, they’d save $10 million in cap space for 2021. And the Eagles are only married to Hargrave through the 2021 season.
So it appears these three will be together for 2020 but after that, the Eagles left themselves some options.
