  • Anyone Else Hear About This? Re: Seattle Looking At Heckert

    From Philly.com:

Tom Heckert is one of three candidates linked to the Seattle Seahawks' general manager opening, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Per the report, the two other candidates are Arizona's Steve Keim and San Diego's Jimmy Raye.
Heckert is in his eighth season with the Eagles. He joined the Birds in 2001 as the director of player personnel. In 2006, Heckert was promoted to general manager. In 2008, he received a contract extension through 2011.
Andy Reid signed a contract extension through 2013 earlier this month, and it's important to remember his title also includes executive vice president of football operations.
Seattle's front office shuffle has been a hot topic this weekend. Mike Holmgren yesterday turned down an offer to take a senior leadership position with the Seahawks.
Earlier this month, Eagletarian wrote about what the potential loss of Heckert could mean for the Eagles.
    Eagletarian:
"...The Eagles' offensive and defensive coordinators, Marty Mornhinweg and Sean McDermott, and general manager Tom Heckert also are signed only through 2010. The past few offseasons, there have been hints that perhaps the Eagles felt it would be acceptable for Heckert to move on to another organization, with Joe Banner protege Howie Roseman steadily gaining stature. Roseman currently is vice president of player personnel. His contract status is not known..."

Well thanks for fucking depressing me! Howie Roseman scares the crap out of me following the Dawkins incident. Most of the media placed the blame for the miscommunication on him.

The Dawkins incident? Why would there be blame assigned to either side?

It is a two way street...Dawkins wanted more $$, rejected the Eagles offer and accepted a better deal while the Eagles did not feel it was warranted to raise the offer they had already made for a 35 yr old S and decided to move on with the younger options they had and would add....

This happens every year around the league and reflects the nature of the NFL and sports in general...no one is to "blame"...it is called both sides making quite rational decisions in line with their goals

As for Heckert leaving, I think it would have an impact as Reid has always brought in very talented people, given them authority, supported them and allowed them to pursue their career goals if the opportunity arises...Heckert is good at his job and would be successful just like Childress, Spags, Harbaugh and the rest

I'm talking about the miscommunication that the Eagles admitted occured during the negotiations. I'm not reopening the Dawkins debate just saying that Howie was beleived to be at the front of the negotiations when the communication problems the Eagles confirmed occured.

Agree Juk. As for Heckert, I'd hate to see him go but that is always part of the package. Guys who are good move on to bigger and better things. He has been here longer than I thought he would be. I'm not big on ol Howie; hopefully Andy has the pull to be able to bring someone in. Who knows?
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
              Hope is not a strategy

My main concern with Heckert leaving isn't so much with him but who he might take with him. I think Heckert has a stable of good talent evaluators that might flee with him to help make their mark outside the clouded hierarchy of the Eagles FO.

I second that. I too am concerned about a potential Eagles FO brain-drain.

I'm not sure what people are afraid of with Roseman, except for this nebulous idea that he's a bean counter and not a 'football man'. Fact is, this past year was Roseman's first in the personnel department and it brought us Peters, Maclin, McCoy, Weaver, and Witherspoon. Surely he wasn't screwing things up that badly. And I don't remember seeing his name linked to the Dawkins situation even once in the media.
