It may have been because I was younger and enjoyed his style more, but I thought he handled the press, fans, and draft really well, which is a lot of what a head coach needs to be good at. And yes, he was a terrific defensive coordinator too, and his Eagles defenses were great. It didn't hurt that he hired a really good defensive coordinator as well (Jeff Fisher).

Thanks for the prod on Ted Plumb. Could not remember that name at all. Found an old article which says Plumb was dumped after being unable to figure out what the Rams defense was doing in that playoff game (which, if I recall, was the beginning of the end since everyone had a blueprint to beat Cunningham after that). Unfortunately... he then hired Kotite to replace him. So yes, that was a failure of Ryan as an Eagles head coach. And, maybe a chronic problem. But I don't think Ryan is a prototypical example of the "good coordinator, bad head coach" genre. Fatally flawed maybe, but not overwhelmed by the job.

Also the players loved playing for him. That's a mark of a good HC.

Ryan's fatal flaw was arrogance. He figured he could build a defense so good that it didn't matter what the offense did.
