Vick speaks out against dogfighting app for the 'droid

I'll give Vick credit, and here's hoping that the makers of Android agree to it.

An Android app called “Dog Wars” allows players to participate in video game dog fights. America’s best-known participant in real-life dog fights is not amused.

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick issued a statement saying that Android should disallow the app because it portrays dogfighting as fun and games.

“I’ve come to learn the hard way that dogfighting is a dead-end street,” Vick said. “Now, I am on the right side of this issue, and I think it’s important to send the smart message to kids, and not glorify this form of animal cruelty, even in an Android app.”

The makers of “Dog Wars,” however, say it’s just a video game and not meant as an endorsement of dogfighting.

“Just because something is illegal in real life in certain countries, does not mean it is illegal to make a song, movie, or video game about it,” the game’s creators said in a statement.

I am glad he took a public position and given his history, he should.

On the other hand, we have tons of violent games out there which glorify rape/drug dealing, murder, everything. Why should a dog fighting app be pulled when the other aren't.

So this is different from Mob type games, how? Oh I forgot - killing people is fine but dogs? AWFUL!!!!

I think they should remove Angry Birds from all phones as chucking Birds at blocks at those speeds is just unacceptable treatment to animals!

Google's pulled the app fwiw. And, 20/20 hindsight, I definitely shouldn't have posted the thread. I meant to give Vick credit, not to bring back the morality debates.

I suppose they'd pull any game, even one like Angry Birds, if enough people protested. Same goes for violent games or apps that glorify rape, drug dealing, murder, etc. I saw a couple of lists of games and apps that have already been banned before this, and some of these app makers have really messed-up imaginations..........

Also Droid OS is open source so Google can remove from the marketplace but the makers can still let people download it from their website.
