  • Are the NFL Owners the greediest people on earth?

It seems that every time we hear anything about money in sports, the NFL owners end up at the top of the list with the largest pile of cash. Coming just a week after the League of Denial piece on how the league tried to hide the injuries and dangers of the game so they could continue to earn massive profits, the story in the Inquirer today shouldn't come as a surprise.

The article says that the owners are making up to 500% more than they are donating to the American Cancer Society for the Think Pink Breast Cancer program. I have no problem with the league making a fortune from their merchandise and ticket sales. The TV revenue and profits from the stadium names etc - it's all fine. But if you're going to publicly promote cancer research in a league wide national effort the way they have for the last several years, at least make the bulk of the money benefit the charity. If they really are raking in the numbers this story suggests, they should be ashamed. The money they make in a single season just from the TV rights alone is more than 99% of the adults in the US will earn in a lifetime. Give the charities the lions share of the money. The greed is running rampant in the NFL.

Cancer research is the smallest beneficiary of profits from the NFL's pink gear

‘Think Pink’ looks a lot more like ‘Think Green’ when it comes to the NFL’s Breast Cancer Awareness initiative, thanks a report by Business Insider that was sparked by a tweet from ESPN’s Darren Rovell.
The report, which examines how profits from the league’s pink merchandise sales are distributed, shows many beneficiaries, but shockingly, the American Cancer Society (ACS) is the smallest.
“For every $100 in pink merchandise sold, $12.50 goes to the NFL. Of that, $11.25 goes to the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the NFL keeps the rest. The remaining money is then divided up by the company that makes the merchandise (37.5%) and the company that sells the merchandise (50.0%), which is often the NFL and the individual teams.”
Therefore, for any pink merchandise purchased from the NFL's official site, the league gets 12.5 percent for royalties (11.25 percent of which they donate to the ACS), but the league then receives an additional 50 percent by being the vendor of the merchandise. So in actuality, the NFL is not donating 11.25 percent of their 12.5 percent, but rather 11.25 percent from their 62.5 percent (slightly less if the gear is bought from a sporting goods store like Sports Authority or Dick's Sporting Goods, who would divvy up the 50 percent with the league).
So while the NFL is parading out players with pink towels, cleats, armbands and tape onto a field emblazoned with pink ribbons and field goal post padding, know that the league is benefitting almost 500 percent as much from the merchandise fans buy than the ACS’s institute for cancer research.
Yes, the NFL is generating tremendous awareness that is instrumental in the fight against breast cancer, but if the league really wanted to make a statement, they would donate their profits to the ACS.

The whole pink thing makes me ill. Every time I think my cynicism must outdo their greed, I am proven wrong.

Here's an idea: 100% of the profits go to breast cancer research! If the company that makes the merchandise want some profit, I guess there's nothing you can do about that but the other 62.5% should go to ACS. I'm sure if the NFL were doing that then Nike or Reebok would cut their profits as well.

Think of the positive PR it would create for the NFL: We actually do care.
I think half of the owners heads would explode.

The league has no need to throw money away for positive PR. The NFL keeps getting crappier and yet the numbers continue to go up every year.

"Throwing money away", I can actually hear some of the owners using those words when it comes to BREAST CANCER RESEARCH!

The proof of this is a story yesterday that said the league is considering adding a second Thursday night game and moving them from the NFL network to Google or Netflix to expand viewership. I guess they don't care that the Thursday night games have been horrible and that teams need more than 3 days between games to rest and prepare. They would never think that the ratings are down because the games aren't worth watching. Easier to blame the network (even if they own it!) and sell more games to a new source. By the time Google or Netflix realize that they paid billions for games that no one wants to see the NFL will already have cashed the check.

If the league does move forward with this it will be very clear to me that they really don't care at all about the quality of the product they put out there.

We care about player safety = 18 regular season games
We care about the quality of the game = 2 thursday night games

I hope the NFL stops caring about stuff.

Juk, I hate to say it but you better believe they only believe in the quality of the product up to the point that they want to make money. To be fair that is why they are in business. The only reason they are in business is to make money and continue for that pot to grow--quality be damned if in gets in the way. If it doesn't get in the way we are fully behind it. I wholeheartedly believe that in my lifetime we will see a program where the only games you see for free are your local team and select ones to keep you intrigued--maybe a Thanksgiving day game or season opener. Otherwise everything else will be pay per view.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy

                      Jukin,

In your initial post you stated, 'If they really are raking in the numbers this story suggests, they should be ashamed'. I honestly think many if not most owners are incapable of experiencing shame where profits bordering on the obscene are concerned. Jones, Snyder, Irsay, and Benson spring immediately to mind.

The additional Thursday games, which the NFL is now claiming it is not considering, is the latest example of the unrelenting greed of at least some of the owners and their $30 million a year lackey Goodell. He trumpets the NFL's new found concern for safety with strict concussion guidelines and endless rules changes and player fines. And then, in direct and transparent disregard for player safety, he tirelessly pushes an expanded season, NFL teams in Europe, more playoff games and now, more Thursday games.

Goodell, who I really admired initially, seems absolutely driven to pursue every possible avenue to produce ever more revenue for the owners. There is something obsessive (almost pathological) about his pursuit of ever greater profits. In doing so he has shown beyond any reasonable question that he is a dissembling hypocrite and little more than an very accomplished huckster and a very well paid whore for hire.

He, and they, fail to recognize that over exposure and truly offensive greed can potentially ruin a good thing.
