  • CBSSports: Bills Aim To Run Fastest NFL Offense

    Kelly says: Oh really?
    Buffalo played fast in 2013, but offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett says it wasn't fast enough.
    The Bills and Chip Kelly's Eagles were the only teams to average fewer than 24 seconds per play. The Bills averaged 23.95 seconds, the Eagles 23.38.
    So although the Bills ranked 29th in yards per play (4., they still finished third in offensive snaps (69.8 per game), trailing only Denver (72.1) and New England (70.4).
    Buffalo ran 334 no-huddle plays, behind only the Eagles, Broncos and Ravens, per NFLSavant.com.
    "We should have run more (plays)," Hackett told the Buffalo News. "We look back at last year, and those first four games when [quarterback] EJ Manuel had a lot of run going on, it was awesome," Hackett said. "We were really rolling. It's funny. You look back on it and as the season went on, with the changes we had at that position, it slowed down.
    "The better we get, the more we have of the understanding of the offense, the faster we can go."

    I've got the feeling that last year will look like slow motion compared to what's coming.

      I wonder if the Bill's slow down as the season progressed was more about them wearing out than the QB change. This is where Chip has the Eagles with the biggest advantage - fitness! This team looks like Olympians. They're in the best shape of any team I can remember.

        fast =/ good.

        Fast 3 and outs is a one way ticket to a coaching change.

          Yeah, it's not so much about merely being fast, as it is being fast to call the right play and execute it before the opponent can come up with the proper counter. Getting them back on their heels unprepared to defend what's coming.

          It takes practice, discipline....and a bright mind behind the controls. I'm talking both Chip and Nick.

            In a couple of short years you'll see an emphasis placed on smart and versatile defensive players who can make the read and adjust on the fly as a counter to the "Chip Kelly Quick Draw Offense". That's about the only way to stop this type of play - get very smart players who are able to make the read, and then make the play. They need to get it right and get the other guy stopped. I think in the near future, the Wonderlic scores will start to be more important for defensive players than some of the strength and speed tests.

              I like the concept of going fast, and the increased conditioning. I like what they're doing.

              But, I still have a hard time letting go of TOP, and the ability to control the clock. In order to be really fast, they're going to need a defense that can get off the field on third down, along with an offense that can move the chains and score.
