I get the reason for this because guys will (in theory) not run the ball out as often, and therefore you'll have less plays with guys running full steam right into each other.
However...am I missing something? Bring the ball out to the 25 seems like a tangible if not significant advantage for the receiving team...so won't you now have kickers TRYING to get the ball to come down around the goal line instead of just booming it out the back of the end-zone?
I mean, ideally, if the ball is going to be brought out to the 25 yard line on a touchback, I think now I'd just rather give the receiving team every opportunity to TRY to bring it out. In other words, a touchback used to be a win for the kicking team. But if it's brought out tot he 25...do you still WANT a touchback anymore???
