  • The Eagles are one of the shrewdest teams....

    in the entire NFL.

Don't think the Eagles know what they are doing?

Wow, in an era where other front offices show little restraint, patience or long term vision, the Birds have made all the right moves IMO this offseason. AND STILL SIT PRETTY CAP WISE!!!!!!

Man, I would hate to play poker against Big Red!

OK, if I told you last December that the Eagles by opening day 2006 would:

    1. Sign Darren Howard
    2. Obtain Donte Stallworth for Simoneau and a #4 (a #3 if they sign him long term)
    3. Dump Koy
    4. Add AJ Feeley as the #3 QB
    5. Add Jeff Garcia as the #2 QB
    6. Dump Pinkston
    7. Trade McMullen for a young phenom Hank Baskett (rated as a potential 3rd -4th rounder, who we learn later the Birds would have taken in the 4th if Avant wasn't there)
    8. Draft Bunkley SITTING PAT, no wasted picks to move up
    9. Steal Winston Justice in Rd.2
    10. Draft super sleeper Chris Gocong-the future potential long term heir to Sam backer, and at worst a good edge rusher in passing downs
    11. Get back a relatively healthy McDougle
    12. Resist efforts to add a big back and "knock wood" get real lucky in having Buckhalter back looking like a reasonable facsimilie of his old self
13.Get Max Jean-Gilles in the 4th round, using Hollis T. as a chip to move up
14.Draft Jason Avant in round 4, who catches everything so far, using Artis Jicks to move up
    15. Get a FREAKISHLY athletic sleeper DT from USC in Round SIX in Ramsey
    16. Get a future punt returner to groom down the line with high upside in Bloom (who sits in IR)
    17. Have the good luck and patience to get JR Reed back as at worst a tough safety reserve and tough (if no longer super explosive KO guy)
    18. Draft a hidden gem in LB Gaither fromTenn. who just makes plays and could be the heir to the Ike Reese captain of the ST's role
    19. Sign what looks like a healthy S. Barber to play nickle LB on the cheap
    20. Sign Jamaal Jackson to a VERY cap freindly long term deal, and annoint him starter over Fraley, and the kid plays well as a bull in the middle of the OL
    21. EXTEND DAWK for 3 years (at a great cap deal to the team)
    22. Extend Andrews at what will look like a steal, as people who know the game proclaim Andrews "the best guard in the NFL" (Rex Ryan said it) and "the next Larry Allen"(Tom Jackson said it).
    23. RE-sign Runyan, who still plays very well, to a cap friendly multi-year deal
    24. Sign Gaffney to a cheapie 1 year deal as insurance
    25. Once again find some quality practice squad candidates as deep street FA's, such as Tank Daniels, J. Hansen, and WR Sampy-to groom fvor the future.
26.Actually seem to commit to the run game in preseason, with Marty M's influence
27.Sign a sleeper TE FA in Schoebel, who will team with LJ in 2 TE sets to stretch the D
    28. Have 21 of 22 starters signed through the end of 2007, all while second in the NFL in terms of cap space
    29. Steal 2 more solid scouts from the Patriots
    30. Extend Heckert and promote him and Jason Licht--who then go on to have what on paper looks like their second straight great draft

Think it was an "accident", or a "weak NFC" (our rivals love that one), or a "down NFC EAST" (popular choice) as to why the Birds went to 4 straight NFCCG's, and won at least 1 playoff game 5 years straight since 2000?

They will extend Stallworth, and then this team has a NEW WINDOW that IMO is a BETTER WINDOW, a deeper, faster, STRONGER team physically with more depth than any of the other teams in the "first run" in Reid's tenure.

I have to tip my hat to this front office. It has been masterful how they have maneuvered and yes RE-BUILT this team on the fly, to somehow be in BETTER shape than in 2000 looking forward.

I have no doubtr that barring catastrophic injury, in the next 2-4 years the Eagles will win at least 1, maybe 2 SB's. This team is that loaded, and with YOUNG players in key positions who will IMPROVE in each of the next 3 years, this is an exciting time to be a fan.

Could you ask for more? Really?

Although I don't necessarily agree with all 30 (!!!) of your points, I do agree that it is amazing what has transpired since the end of the season. In fact, to me it is almost unbelievable what has happened in just the past week.

The team has made major moves with seeming relative ease. Awesome and truly an exciting time to be an Eagles fan. Now we just wait for the real fun to start.

i agree that this has been a terrific offseason. i think they've had two great drafts in a row, and i like the look of the team.

but they absolutely needed to be at their best in this transition period of the last two years if they are going to continue to contend. they couldnt just assume they would return to the top of the NFC East by getting their players healthy again.

to their credit, they haven't. they've added talent at every position, it seems.

They do a good job, no doubt about that.

I mean this Stallworth deal still has me amazed.

Excellent job of cataloging the moves!

I think my biggest admiration for the FO and Reid comes from the fact that while they made all these changes, the average age of the team is around 25. Except Dawkins, Trotter (who's not exactly old), Kearse, Howard and Thomas/Runyan, the rest of the team has at least 5 more years together. And while they are all big names, their replacements are just around the corner, or can be drafted easily in time because we still have both the picks and the cap space.

i was at lunch and thinking along similar lines...but primarily about cap space. i think of cap space like my savings account. just because there is money there doen't mean i should spend. i might not use it this year or next or the following. but when I need it I know it is there. the eagles are doing the same with their cap. you have to trust the team. they haven't done anything to warrant a mutiny

I think there is a post from 7.2 yrs ago of me and you... With me trying to convince "You" that this young guy from the Packers was a steal... I think I got flamed for giving him a chance...

Oh boy here we go... Who were the choices over AR anyway? I forget...

                    Dom Capers
                    Jim Haslett

Those were the two who were getting the most play. Ironically TO helped Reid get his job.

Remember that catch in GB where Young threaded a bullet to him and the announcer goes crazy saying "OWENS! OWENS! OWENS! HE caught it! He caught it! He caught it!"?

That elimnated the Packers and allowed the Eagles to interview Andy. Had the Packers advanced the Eagles wold've probably hired Capers or Haslett.

So, thank you TO! Now get back to ruining Dallas!

Can I add that athletes, and experienced NFL players, they KNOW when they have a good team going into a season. Nobody knows talent like the actual PLAYERS,

I see a good storm brewing here:

(1)The Birds inside the locker room KNOW they have a potential BEAST of a team, and
                              (2) Nobody on the outside respects the team.
