Finally had some down time this weekend. So I pondered what my beloved Philadelphia Eagles have done. I took a position by position look as to where the team was at the end of last year and where they are now. I came away thinking we have upgraded in most areas. Will this translate to more wins, don't know but...
1. Quarterback - Wentz should be better in year 2 but either way I see Foles as an upgrade to Daniels, so in my opinion the position is actually better this year.
2. Running Back - I think we may be the same if not a little bit worse. Sproles is a year older, Mathews is will most likely be gone. We only got a half year out of Smallwood but I liked what he did, good chance he is better next year, Watson and Marshall are little more unknowns but showed some flashes.
3. Wide Receiver - Much better, no need for an explanation here.
4. Tight End - The Same, not changes.
5. Offensive line - Better depth for sure. Good chance left guard will be better just through competition. Left Tackle is a guessing game as Peters is going to be 35, could lose it at any time. But overall I think we are a little better at the Oline.
Offense overall should be better.
1. Defensive End - Slightly better, Long is probably a better pass rusher than Barwin, but not so sure he is as good as stopping the run. The rest are the same.
2. Defensive Tackle - Up until the Allen injury I though we had a chance to be slightly better as I think Jernigan is a better pass rusher than Logan and on par as far as run stuffing. Losing Allen hurts the rotation some. So overall neutral
3. Linebacker - the same
4. Safety - The same
5. Cornerback - Interesting as I don't think we are any worse but we are certainly not better. Both of the starters were bad last year. Mills in year 2 could be better. Biggest need on the team still.
Overall I think we upgraded WR, OL,DE, QB and possibly DT. The same or worse at CB and RB. This should tell us the direction in the draft. Not necessarily round 1 but loading up on CB's and a RB or two will be a priority. I would say at least 3 maybe 4 of the 8 picks go in that direction. Just my opinion. Overall though, at least on paper I think the team should be a little better next year.
