Get used to it, and enjoy the ride! (I owe MD a royalty fee for that)
Notice that the title "Kolb is not Maddox" isn't nearly as good at getting attention?
I like his points that "drafting a QB to motivate McNabb will not win us a SB, but drafting players to support the Eagles will help..."
Oh well. Anyway.
McNabb is Not Elway

McNabb is Einhorn!
I was watching the latest episode of Lost when I was hit with the ultimate “Finkle is Einhorn” realization. If you watch the show, the revelation was that Jacob (the Wizard behind the curtain) is Locke; Locke is Jacob. If you don’t watch, don’t sweat it, because I only bring it up to parallel what many writers have been saying about Donovan McNabb.
Ever since the Eagles drafted Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb with their first pick in the 2007 draft, every pundit this side of Sal Paolantonio has been having their own Pet Detective moment. All of the sudden, Donovan McNabb is John Elway. John Elway is Donovan McNabb.
The ‘thinking’ (I use the word in a very loose sense) goes like this: At 31, Elway was a great quarterback who couldn’t win the big one. Then, the Broncos drafted Tommy Maddox as his successor. The selection of Maddox supposedly lit a fire under Elway as he led Denver to back-to-back championships.
So…naturally the same thing will happen with Donovan McNabb. He is a great (I use the word great in a loose sense) quarterback who can’t win the big one. Now that Kevin Kolb is an Eagle, he similarly will be motivated to win multiple championships.
Great job Andy! You just ensured the Eagles multiple Super Bowl titles. After all, if it happened in Denver, it has to happen in Philly. Logic dictates it.
Please.
Let’s take it easy on the revisionist history here. The Broncos didn’t draft Tommy Maddox to spark John Elway. They drafted him because they thought Maddox would be a star in the NFL. He was anything but. Denver’s two Super Bowl wins five years later, did not convert the Maddox pick into inspired genius.
On top of which, can we take a serious look at the causal relationship that these experts (again, a very loose sense) seem to glance over? Broncos draft Maddox to ignite Elway; Elway wins Super Bowl for Broncos.
Oh yeah? Maddox was taken in 1992, the Broncos won in ‘97 and ’98. After the ‘brilliant’ Maddox pick, but before winning a Super Bowl, Denver acquired Terrell Davis (drafted in ‘95), Rod Smith (as an undrafted rookie in ’94), Ed McCaffrey (free agent in ’95), Bill Romanowski (free agent in ’96) and Trevor Pryce (drafted in ’97).
Call me crazy, but I’m guessing those players—who actually contributed on the field--had a little more to do with getting Elway over the hump than Tommy Maddox ever did.
So, let’s hold off on calling Andy Reid a genius for drafting Kevin Kolb to motivate Donovan McNabb. You don’t win championships by drafting players to motivate your current players. You win championships by drafting players that play alongside your current players. Kevin Kolb will never help Donovan on the field (unless a wild hog gets loose). That’s why the Kolb pick is a bad move no matter how you look at it (unless he’s the next Elway).
Oh, and let’s not give a pass on this whole comparing McNabb to Elway thing. McNabb is no Elway. When the Broncos took Maddox, Elway was irate. He stepped out of his role as franchise quarterback and fired back at Denver, wondering why the Broncos were drafting his future replacement instead of giving him help to win a Super Bowl.
McNabb…well he sat silent for weeks (aside from a “befuddled” text message). Then, in his ‘rebel’ moment, gave an interview (brought to you by Comcast!) without the permission of the Eagles (gasp!). What’s next Donovan? Are you only going to look one way before you cross the street?
McNabb should be blasting the Eagles just like Elway blasted the Broncos. Despite what Andy Reid says about Philly’s depth, we all know the team has plenty of holes to fill. And, as far as I know, Kevin Kolb can't play linebacker. He is not going to help Philly win a championship in the McNabb era. Kolb might have been the best athlete on Philly’s board at the time (though I doubt it), but unless Andy has invented a revolutionary two quarterback offense, McNabb should be blasting the organization for not trying to win this year.
Why didn’t Donovan do that? He’ll never tell us. Maybe someone should ask his dad.
