  • Kenny Pickett anyone?

At lease we have a backup with some experience.

Kenny Pickett is headed to the other side of Pennsylvania.

According to multiple reports, the Steelers have agreed to trade Pickett to the Eagles.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Pittsburgh will receive a third-round pick (No. 98 and two 2025 seventh-round picks. In addition to Pickett, Philadelphia will receive a fourth-round pick (No. 120) to complete the deal.

The No. 20 overall pick of the 2022 draft, Pickett started 24 games for Pittsburgh over the last two seasons, compiling a 14-10 record.

While he led six fourth-quarter comebacks with seven game-winning drives, Pickett’s overall performance was not particularly impressive. He completed 63 percent of his throws for 2,404 yards with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions as a rookie. In 2023, he completed 62 percent of passes for 2,070 yards with six touchdowns and four picks.

Weird. Kind of sucks to lose the 3rd rounder. But we do get a young backup QB that grew up an Eagles fan.

The guaranteed money for KP is peanuts and honesty I don’t think he’s that bad. The Steelers didn’t have an explosive offense by any means.

my only concern is that third rounder was where I thought they could target Trot Jr.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

Gave away a 3rd, but got a 4th. I am not much of a Pickett fan. But, I get the move.

he costs less than 2 mill towards the cap. That's another player, maybe 2 that you can pay over Mariotta at 9 million. Now that he is in the QB factory, he may flourish . He's a tough kid , a change may help him
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

This wasn't on my bingo card at all! Can't say I was thrilled initially, but I get it after thinking about the 'why'.

Low-cost, cost controlled, experienced, young backup QB that can be flipped for a future pick after a while. That aint bad.

Won't be drafting a developmental QB this year I'd guess.

I was hoping that we would get a good preseason out of McKee and go with him as #2. I think they got a hell of a good deal with that trade for Pickett though.

We get a cheap backup at rookie salary for two years. The 3rd round pick we traded is valued at 108 on the draft chart; the one we got back is valued at 54, which is a pretty significant drop. An even trade on the draft chart would have been the Eagles pick at 98 for the two Pittsburgh picks at 119 and 120. So, the Eagles traded the equivalent of a mid to late round 4th pick for Pickett. The two 2025 7ths don't count for anything on the draft chart, though would have been nice to have.

But, this means we save several million on the cap versus signing a veteran backup. I was certainly hoping McKee was ready for being the backup, but I guess not this year. If he is by next year, maybe we could trade Pickett again and recoup some of that.

The similar trade for Minshew was far better; that was just a sixth rounder. Though, that came at a time when there were likely fewer suitors. Not sure I really like trading out of that pick by that much. Maybe we trade down with one of the 2nds and still get Trotter (He may not be there by 3rd round comp picks, if other teams overdraft LBs due to need as there don't seem to be that many highly rated ones). If Pickett turns out to be much better than he looked in Pittsburgh (entirely possible given their own dysfunction at OC) then it will have been worth it. It may not be fun watching players we want go off the board between 98 and 120 in the draft though

So we gave up more for Kenny Pickett and his small hands than Pittsburgh traded for Justin Fields? As much as I don’t want to “upset” Hurts I’d rather the more talented quarterback who better fits our offense. Fields >>> Pickett.

You have to make the decision whether to give Fields the 5th-year option (25 million guaranteed) before May. Eagles will not do that, Steelers might. We'd have a backup QB for one season only, then hope for a good comp pick. Pickett is definitely less talented, but we have him for two seasons if needed, both very cheap. Have the option of trading him if McKee is ready, or getting a second season out of him.

The financial issues obviously played a huge part in what the league was willing to give up for Fields. A year ago, would have been very different.
