Today marked the second Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice ahead of the 2024 season. The session lasted for a little under 90 minutes. Here’s what I observed at the NovaCare Complex.
    EAGLES PRACTICE NOTES
    • JALEN HURTS UPDATE: A lot more of the same we saw from Hurts on Day 1, which is important. Gotta stack those good days. Hurts has been very efficient; the ball has rarely hit the ground. He’s been very decisive as both a passer and a runner. Hurts’ average time to throw sped up from 2021 to 2022 but then regressed back to pre-2022 levels in 2023, so, it’s been good to see him making quicker decisions and not holding onto the ball for forever. Now presumably healthier than he was last year, Hurts looks a lot faster than the last time we saw him play. That’s been apparent when he’s been running away from pressure and also when he’s taken off upfield. Hurts’ most noteworthy completion came in 7-on-7 when he dropped the ball in the bucket to A.J. Brown for an over-the-shoulder catch along the right sideline with Darius Slay trailing in coverage.

    Day 1: Thumbs up

    Day 2: Thumbs up
    • EAGLES INJURY UPDATES: Jeremiah Trotter Jr. went down on the final play of practice and was eventually taken off the field in a cart but reporting indicates he avoided a serious injury. Phew. Landon Dickerson (toe laceration) returned to practice in a limited capacity; he did not take part in full team drills. Oren Burks (knee) and Brett Toth (hamstring) both missed practice. Sydney Brown is still on active/PUP while Cooper DeJean and Shaquan Davis are still on active/NFI.
    • EAGLES ROSTER NEWS: In case you missed it, the Eagles re-signed wide receiver Griffin Hebert and waived UDFA offensive lineman Gottlieb Ayedze from the active/NFI list.
    • CORNERBACK TRAINING CAMP BATTLE: On Day 1, Darius Slay and Isaiah Rodgers were the first-team cornerbacks in 11-on-11 while Slay and Kelee Ringo were the first-team cornerbacks in 7-on-7. On Day 2, Ringo and Rodgers traded places. Towards the end of practice, Slay seemed to be getting a breather while both Rodgers and Ringo were on the field together. Neither Rodgers nor Ringo have made plays on the ball like they often did in the spring, in part because Hurts looks much sharper. So, neither player is rising above the other just yet but we’ll continue to monitor this situation daily. Elsewhere at CB, Quinyon Mitchell saw some second-team slot reps while Rodgers and Eli Ricks were the outside corners.
    • LINEBACKER TRAINING CAMP BATTLE: Zack Baun and Devin White were the first-team linebackers in 11-on-11 again. White and Nakobe Dean were first up at linebacker in 7-on-7. Dean then saw some first-team action next to Baun. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. saw a few first-team linebacker reps (around three or so), typically on the final play of a given series. Trot Jr. was paired with White in his last 11-on-11 series. The Eagles are clearly trying things out but Trot Jr. getting some chances with the starters seems like a positive sign.
    • WR3 TRAINING CAMP BATTLE: Whereas Parris Campbell was exclusively WR3 on Day 1, John Ross was the guy on Day 2. He didn’t really stand out; Campbell caught more passes (albeit short ones).
    • Not a position battle but worth noting that Kenny Gainwell has seen a decent amount of first-team running back reps. Hardly suggesting that he’s overtaking Saquon Barkley. But it’s not like Barkley is exclusively the first-team running back.
    • More pre-snap motion talk: there was a rep where Barkley lined up out wide left and came running right while the ball was snapped ... only for Hurts to take off running to the space that Barkley had vacated for a big gain.
    • Interesting point raised by the PHLY Eagles podcast on Wednesday: the Eagles seem to be putting more of an emphasis on conditioning this offseason. The evidence being their breakneck speed practices (hearkening back to the days of Chip Kelly) thus far and changes to their training staff (Ted Rath was notably not retained). On Thursday, Eagles players would run to the end zone after their series was over. That’s not something they were regularly doing in previous years.
    • Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis combined for a pressure that forced Hurts to roll out left and fire a pass to DeVonta Smith, who made a great effort to catch the ball but the pass didn’t give him space to stay in-bounds. Davis later had a run stuff on a Saquon Barkley rushing attempt.
    • I tried to key in on Tyler Steen more than I did on Day 1. I didn’t notice any struggles when I watched him.
    • Jalyx Hunt looks more advanced than I expected him to be (in fairness, a very low bar to clear). He had a rep on Thursday where he beat Mailata to the inside on a running play. Hunt didn’t get to the ball carrier but he disrupted the play. Mailata hit his head in frustration after that rep and Hunt got some high fives once he got to the sideline.
    • Avonte Maddox punched the ball out of C.J. Uzomah’s control after the veteran made a short catch in the flat. Haven’t been impressed by Uzomah so far.
    • Tyrion Davis-Price broke off a long run at one point. But what stood out even more to me was how impressive Isaiah Rodgers looked being able to get in position to chase him down from behind (without actually making the tackle, of course). Rodgers has some serious speed.
    • Rodgers was the only defensive player to take reps with all the offensive guys in a ball security drill. Obviously related to Rodgers’ potential as a return option.
    • Kenny Pickett looked worse on Day 2 than he did on Day 1. Pickett nearly threw a pick to Terrell Lewis, who made a pretty impressive leaping effort to almost come up with the ball.
    • Ainias Smith dropped a pass and failed to come up with a contested grab later on. Smith has also struggled with muffed punts so his hands are looking like an issue.
    • Tyler Hall saw some first-team reps at nickel cornerback in 7-on-7. He stands to benefit from Cooper DeJean’s absence.
    • Special teams coordinator Michael Clay had the Eagles line up and practice the new kick return coverage format. The first group of guys on that unit: Avonte Maddox, Patrick Johnson, Zack Baun, Josh Jobe, Mekhi Garner, Tristin McCollum, Kelee Ringo, Nolan Smith, Ben VanSumeren, Grant Calcaterra.

UP NEXT: The Eagles will hold a walkthrough closed to media access on Friday. They’ll return to practice on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM Eastern.

Ainias Smith has really been the one negative we have heard about since the draft. Unless he makes a 180 in preseason, he is a PS guy at best.

New England had horrible receivers the past two years and he was one of them. If you had any talent at all they would have kept him . I never expected much out of him and was surprised that we picked him up.

Smith was a draft pic , you’re thinking of someone else. It’s too early in camp to label anyone. The kid is moving to the big time. He has a lot on his plate. Wilson must be a bust as well, he hasn’t gotten many plays. Jeez, let’s wait till we see them in pads and against other players before we throw them to the curb
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

DeVante Parker retired. No longer our problem.

Ainias Smith is a 5th round draft pick, WR and returner in college who seemed to be a gadget guy we could use in many different ways. Thus far he hasn't been able to catch punts, per reports, and has not stood out at WR. This is of course minicamps and three days without pads. But has not flashed yet. Not a big deal if we had other depth but our WR3 could be lacking, again. The big WR pick Wilson has also apparently had a couple of drops.

Long way to go but it seems WR3 is a lot harder to find than it should be.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
            Hope is not a strategy
            RIP

It's not surprising that somebody 6' 6" and runs a 4.5 40 has Mutombo's hands of stone. If he could catch the ball he would have been a top 10 pick.

Based on what I am hearing about Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, this DL could be the best in the league. I watch a ton of SEC football and that Georgia defense two years ago was the best defense I ever saw by a long ways. Seriously, scheme wise this could be another 70 sack season as long as the corners aren't just absolute trash... and I don't think they will be. Slay is going to still be slay and I think we have 3-4 guys behind him that can all start.

I am already worried about the Iowa kid's health though. He was often injured in college.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

Yes and he's hurt already now

But the Birds are surely being ultra conservative with his injury. I’m not gonna worry
