  • Eagles vs Bears Observations

I am not going to lie for the first time since 2023 I turned the game off after the Hurts tush push fumble and the defense immediately allowing yet another long run to a rookie 7th round pick. At that point I had seen enough.

    1. Hurts - Extremely poor game. Missed too many throws, was indecisive and turned the ball over. He basically played with his head up his arse all game. There were receivers open he just missed them. The turnovers were extremely elementary and things he normally doesn't do.

    2. Offensive Line - Another week another poor performance. Couldn't open up holes in the run despite playing against a team with a poor run defense. Changes need to be made. The backups might not have the same athletic talent but can they execute basic plays. Because the starters right now can not.

    3. Barkley - He actually started off with a few pretty good runs, then he slowed down against before hitting the line and got hit for a TFL. Now the play probably doesn't get much but if he keeps his feet moving instead of stopping he may get back to the LOS or gain a year. Every inch counts with this offense.

    4. Jake Elliot - Two weeks in a row now he has killed momentum. I will talk more about him a little later but he should be on very thin ice.

    5. AJ Brown - Quit your crying and get into the damn playbook. Two more costly penalties this week. This has to stop.

    6. Coordinators - Patullo was OK today. I know that is not going to be a popular opinion but when your QB can't hit wide open receivers, is fumbling the ball and throwing INT add in an oline that can't open holes for the RB and well its hard to call and design plays.
Fangio on the other hand was extremely bad today as was the entire defense. Its very simple, the Bears are a run first team they are similar to the way we played last year. They rarely turn the ball over and they play ball control. You don't play soft zone against them because a rookie 7th round pick and Swift will put up 250 plus yards on the ground against you. Today screamed of a day you played base defense. with Campbell playing the weak side linebacker. Campbell can cover a tight end as good as any of our safeties or linebackers. If they run a pass he follows the Tight End, however he plays closer to the LOS. Too many times they were light in the box six guys, 5 guys at least 7 yards off the LOS. Either the Bears threw quick passes or ran the ball down their throat. The only adjustment I saw Vic make was to put in Byron Young at the end and that failed to. Because they were double teaming every interior guy. And before I hear we only scored 9 points and we did and that is an issue. When you allow that type of ball control to another team you keep the ball out of your offenses hands
Michael Clay - Another missed extra point, no real return yards, Britan Covey who has zero speed didn't field the first punt cost them at least 15 yards by letting it bounce. This has to get fixed ASAP.

We can bitch all we want but the fact is this is 2023 all over again. However this time the change has to be different. I am not changing coordinators, although some edicts have to be sent down, especially to Fangio. We are in cold weather now, teams are not going to hit the bomb on you. You need to stop the run and sometimes it going to take more than 4 down lineman. Trust your Defensive backs a little more in one on one. Patullo is trying some different things the players just are not executing. I don't know what else he can do. I think he is searching for something this team does well on offense. He has to figure out what this team is going to be and do it every quickly.

Players this time will need to be accountable for this mess. I would bench AJ Brown not for his crying but for the penalties. He leads the lead in WR penalties. That is hard to do. Now the benching could be for a game or for a half whatever a message needs to be sent. Clean up the damn penalties. Saquan Barkley needs to be phases back. He does not have the same burst and he is now trying to cut and dance too much. Take what is there live for the next down. Let Bigsby run more. Hurts is an interesting one. As he has not played well for six quarters now. If he comes out next week with the same demeanor, the same issues. Bench him. Quarter half game whatever. If the offense starts moving without him then he sits longer. I don't care how much money he is making, he is a big part of the issues this team is having. The offensive line is harder. Those guys are not healthy but you don't have a guy to plug in for Mailata as Johnson is playing for Johnson. Dickerson I would play Toth more. I thought that Jurgens played better today.

I would get a kicker on the practice squad this week. Cutting Elliot is complicated due to his contract but there is nothing saying they can't deactive him for a week. Missing kicks usually leads to loses.

There are no cookbook answers to fixing this. Maybe this just can't be fixed until the offseason. Going back to back for Super Bowls are extremely extremely hard. There schedule is brutal and there are no breaths to figure out issues as they arise. Really other than the Raiders there are no "" wins on the schedule. The Commanders are going to get heathy just in time to play the Eagles. As will the Chargers.

    Here’s my plan:

    1. Nick takes over playcalling immediately. or give it to someone else. KP cannot continue because it’s clear the team is demoralized. if he can’t turn it around, at least you tried something new.
    2. if Jalen continues to struggle even after Nick takes over, bench him
    3. hire a real OC in the offseason: Daboll or McDaniel

Address everything else in the offseason.

Not sure I would throw shade at AJ. Made a great TD catch on a poor throw and competed till the end. Agree with most of the rest.

Its funny that the two responses today are about the offense. Meanwhile the defense let the Bears on the field for almost 40 minutes. Gave up 285 yards on the ground 6 ypc.

I will again say the problems on offense are much deeper than the OC. Any offense starts with the Oline. This is the worst Oline we have had in a very long time. Only the names are the same but they are not the same players. They can't run the ball which makes it that much harder to pass the ball. Add in your QB now the last two weeks is completing just over 50% of his passes. He is missing open receivers. My blame for the offense

        Offensive Line - 50%
        Hurts - 25%
        Penalties - %5
        OC - 20%

I would bring in Frank Reich as a consultant for the rest of the year. He’s the interim HC at Stanford and their season ends next Saturday. He and Nick are close and he should be familiar with our offense. I’d sit Brown and Hurts next week and let Nick call the plays. That sends a message that both the players and the coaches are accountable for their play, their penalties and their coaching.

Guve Reich a week to get up to speed as a consultant and see if he wants to take over play calling as part of the role. At the very least he’d be a fresh set of eyes and a new voice in the room.

The oline isn’t as dominant and I think they are overcompensating for the lack of muscle with stupid plays that are getting flagged. I doubt that we can rotate in backups to help reduce the strain on them without impacting what little timing they have going. Not sure there is a salve for this wound.

D I think it’s more complicated. We brought back BG who is more a voice of leadership than a field presence right now. The biggest problem I see are stupid junior high penalties and an inability to tackle. They have to focus on tackling and basic football because the penalties are killing us. I think they need to call guys out for both in the meetings and if it continues, they sit.

I would love to find a way to bring Frank Reich in. If anything, he could help with the mental state of this offense at least.

If the Cowboys go 4-1 and we finish 2-3, we lose the division. Looking at the Cowboys schedule, that could easily happen with the current state of this team.

Also agree with SF. The lack of TOP on offense is hurting the defense. I am not going to look it up. But, how many games this year have we lost the TOP and yardage battle ? I am nearly certain we are on the short end of most games.

Listening to the postgame show on our ride home from Iowa, they pointed out that Ben Johnson's running game is predicated on getting lateral movement along the defensive front to create lanes. That worked like gangbusters. Why were we not able to adjust? Why not stick 3-4 big bodies up front. Stack the line with size and force Mitchell and others to cover some pretty average WRs.

The issue with the offense is there but they didn't have the ball a helluva lot either because the Bears just ran it right down our throats.

I am so tired of making excuses for Saquon. The guy was all world last year. This year he doesn't even look like a top 10 back and yet Bigsby can't get a single fucking carry. They put them in the game together one time and they throw it to Saquon and he wasn't looking.

The throw from Hurts to Devonte just can't happen. That has to be on him. That was a TD.

Goedert had zero targets I think or maybe one.

Hardly no lining up under center. Very little motion. No reverse action hardly. They did bootleg Hurts a few times.

This team is broken and it is not getting fixed this year. Nick can stay but they have to get a real offensive coordinator and pay him a 3 year $9 million deal to get him to stay. Brian Daboll knows Hurts. He has worked with him before. Get him in here next year.

And yes I know the OL is playing poorly but supposedly after the game CJGJ said they knew what we were going to run the entire time. This shit is just too predictable.

And my only comment and it may sound like I am making excuses but for the second week in a row the zebras called a COMPLETE HORSE SHIT OPI on an Eagle that took away a big play and got us behind the chains. Last week the phantom OPI on Devonte that basically killed a drive. This week the phantom OPI on AJ that killed a drive.

Enough of this shit. The NFL is such a great product when it is great but the officials are just so involved in these games it looks like it is rigged. And don't tell me that didn't matter. We were moving the ball there. That drive was stopped by a bullshit call today.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

Bigsby not getting a carry is criminal. That’s on our coaches. Saquon wouldn’t pout about it.

Hurts was terrible today. Two very bad TOs although honestly the pick didn't bother me as much as the fumble. He fumbled this year are the biggest killer. Twice in the red zone this year that killed drives. But the two terrible misses to Davonta did it for me! He was brutal!

The Oline can frankly go to hell! Steen is abysmal and the rest are living off of last year. They are not very good.
Barkley needs to sit 3 or more series a game. He is woefull this year. Seems disinterested.

Gonna leave the OC out of this one. Tired of beating that dead horse.

The defense got punked again like the 1st Giants game. That was some of the worse tackling and run defense i have ever seen. Fangio again resting on laurels.

Jake is a problem. He needs competition this week.

Lastly Nick! The going for two was a terrible call. The presnap penalties still a problem and no one is on the bench because of it.

The refs continue a season long string of brutal calls against the Eagles that even the official watching with the TV is saying they are bad calls. Nick needs to stop sending tape and just lay a freakin ref out. Take the 15 yards and light a damn fire under someone.

Which leads me to the last point. This whole team seems lackluster and disinterested. Carter smiling with the Bears offense after jumping off sides. Jalen stoic is great but at some point he needs to show more fire and lay into teammates and them into him.
This team blew a great chance of repeating. There is no one they can't beat. But also there is no one that can't beat them including the Raiders. And that is saying something

                      A few thoughts

                      1. I love the media calling us Eagles fans fickle for booing a team that won the Super Bowl. So stupid. Bad execution deserves booing at any stadium. And that WAS bad! So they can stop w that bs.

                      2. Not calling Patullo great or anything. But I still don’t think he is the issue. Plays are there. Dumb penalties, breakdowns and poor execution is the issue.

                      3. feels like this team got full of themselves. Winning the SB last year made 2022 look better. Ignoring 2023. Looks like they think they are better than they are

                      4. wonder if new playoff format isn’t making it tougher for the 2 SB teams. Especially if you don’t get home field. 17 reg season games and 4 more to win a title is a lot. Especially when you come back w mostly the same guys.

                      5. Fangio didn’t adjust. First awful game in a while. Should have had more 3 LB sets. Did Campbell even play? We knew it was windy. Knew stopping the run would be important. Not only didn’t we, it was historically one of the worst days ever.

                      6. Hats off to the Bears. They went out there and earned it. Looked a lot like last years Eagles. Physical. Dominating. Wish we could look like last years Eagles.

Agree with everything Dawk except Patullo. I know the Oline is not close to the same as last year but play design is terrible (Sirianni mostly to blame there). Play sequencing is terrible too.
I’m ready to move on from Sirianni to be honest. You can’t keep finding new OC every year, at some point you need a head coach that can figure things out. Lurie knows this too.
If this goes south, I wouldn’t be surprised if we hire Josh McDaniels. We almost hired him last time and he was Howie’s choice.

I heard Hurts do something he's never done before: he subtly blamed Smitty on the missed TD. He said basically he expected Smitty to stop and dig in. Something along the lines of "I was not detailed enough with him." So he took the blame for "details" but he thought Smitty was gonna stop. We won't know what the route was but it was interesting that Hurts did that.
