  • (OT) A little Holiday help please........

I have a Niece, 18 years old with CF.

She has always been active and community orientated and has raised several hundreds of thousands of dollars for CF over the years. Straight A student and while of course can't attend a school away from home due to treatments, was attending the local Community College and getting straight A's there also.

If any of you know how CF works then you will understand when I tell you that in her teenage years things have gone downhill, to make a long story short -- She now lies in intensive care at CHOP (Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia) hooked to a ventilator, unable to breathe on her own since Thanksgiving. She was on drugs that would paralyze her, along with the ventilator, and as such was basically in an induced coma.

They have now (about 2 weeks ago) concluded that she needs a double lung transplant........ ASAP. She is on the list and from what I gather fairly high on that list.

We have been spending as much time as we can up there, obviously to support my wifes brother and sister-in-law, and we have seen a lot of progress. She is now breathing about 50% of the time on her own and the drugs that create the paralysis are being weaned slowly and it now appears that she is out of immediate danger.

Let me preface this by saying that this is no way intended to be a religious post--- but any prayers or good intentions or cosmic waves that you and your family could find the time to forward her way would be greatly appreciated. Whether it be God, Buddha, Mohammad, Zeus, Apollo or what ever you may believe in or trust, just a few positive thoughts might go a long way.

So during this Holiday Season when we all look over and appreciate all we have and hold dear -- please remember Colette in your thoughts.

MD, I'll be offering up some prayers for her daily. This is the season of miracles so I'll offer up some extra heavy ones on Christmas and Christmas Eve. I'll ask Ellen to do the same. Please accept my best to you and your family.

May the Lord God give your niece and all of her family, including you, the strength to push through this ordeal and also give you all comfort while doing so.

MD. CHOP is a great institution. I actually call on the doctor at UPenn that I think is probably your neice's physician and he is wicked smart so I will offer up my prayers for your neice but I will also tell you she is in good hands.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

Her primary Dr. is a Dr. Allen (great guy), but as she transitions she is under the care of a Dr. Patch (who I understand is the best in the field and has written much of the literature on this transitional phase).... I don't know anybody on the lung replacement team of course, since they won't come into play till a set of lungs are available, although I'm sure my Brother-in-law must know who the surgeon will be.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts guys! I will be sure to pass them on!

Just a quick update guys-- Good news, Colette is now off the respirator and breathing somewhat on her own (there is some aide still going on). While still heavily sedated they do bring her to an awake stage a couple of times a day. And make her talk and sit up.

Still in the ICU and will be for more weeks---- just keep giving that mojo, Karma, thoughts and prayers for a new set of lungs.

                            Thanks
