Pride and arrogance go before fall of a dynasty

Something so high and mighty had to come crashing down because of something so impossibly silly and small. Yes, the beginning of the end of the Los Angeles Lakers (news) can be traced to one of Shaquille O'Neal's itsy, bitsy toes and his selfish decision to wait a fun-filled summer before fixing it.
O'Neal wanted that 2002 surgery on company time, remember? He held out until September, if only to teach Kobe Bryant some misguided lesson in November. The Lakers opened 6-12, blew any chance for home-court advantage through the playoffs and surrendered their four-peat shot in a loss to San Antonio. Game, set, dynasty.
