How good does Jalen really have to be?

Sure I would love to have a more talented quarterback, but is a top five quarterback really necessary? I Don't think so and I think Jalen has proved that. What he has to be is a franchise quarterback and I think he's proven that part. The best quarterback doesn't win the Super Bowl every year. So if there are 15 quarterbacks better than him that's OK. As long as they keep putting W's on the board who cares? Let somebody else boast about their quarterback, I want to boast about Super Bowls! I sure hope I get to see another one one of these days. Hey, I've already seen two that I never thought I would.

The latest position of focus in ESPN’s annual NFL survey of league executives, coaches, and scouts is the most important one in football: quarterback.
You will not find Super Bowl LIX MVP Jalen Hurts ranked in the top 10, however:

  2. Patrick Mahomes
  3. Matthew Stafford
  4. Joe Burrow
  5. Lamar Jackson
  6. Dak Prescott
  7. Justin Herbert
  8. Drake Maye
  9. Jared Goff
  10. Caleb Williams
One year after placing ninth in this activity, Hurts has dropped down to being the very last name in the “honorable mention” category (which puts 16 total quarterbacks ahead of him … coincidentally, Pro Football Focus recently ranked Hurts similarly as QB15).
Funny enough, the provided blurb for Hurts is more positive than critical:
“I know it has been up-and-down, but I’m still betting on the Super Bowl credentials, the intangibles and the toughness.” -- AFC offensive coach

Quarterback discussion tends to be pretty polarizing and Hurts is no exception to this dynamic. If anything, he might be the most polarizing player at his position. His biggest supporters can point to his Super Bowl success, his second-most wins in the NFL since 2022, and the kind of characteristics mentioned by this AFC coach. His biggest detractors can point to an Eagles passing offense that’s been uneven for multiple years now, Hurts’ declining rushing production, and personality questions.

As a self-described “Jalen Hurts centrist” who believes More Than One Thing Can Be True™, I don’t find myself getting bent out of shape about this ranking. I understand those who argue Hurts should be ahead of players who’ve accomplished much less than he has. His status as a playoff riser cannot be discounted. But I also think it’s fair to acknowledge that Hurts — to some extent — has benefited from more support than some of these other quarterbacks have and that’s a factor to consider.
We can got lost in the weeds of debating rankings, which don’t actually really matter (save for making some discussion in the slowest NFL news cycle of the year). As for what I do find meaningful from this activity? Whether he’s aware of this specific ranking or not, I tend to think Hurts benefits from a general outside perception that he’s being disrespected or underrated. He’s already a highly motivated individual but one gets the sense he relishes in proving his doubters wrong. Remember the “So that’s what y’all wanted to see, huh?” moment from the 2024 season? Of course you do.
With this in mind, there’s reason to be optimistic about Hurts entering 2026. He’s very driven to work against skepticism. He might really benefit from Sean Mannion’s vision for the Eagles’ offense. A strong season will likely result in a new contract extension that puts him in the top 10 quarterbacks by annual value (he’s currently 12th).
If Hurts falters? Well, there’s vindication for the consensus of ESPN’s survey.

Okay, Tier 6 feels harsh. Hurts should be Tier 5 at worst. I’m definitely not putting Love or Lawrence above him.
 
‘Who’s the best’ is certainly a subjective, and probably silly, discussion. Hurts probably isn’t top ten but he sure isn’t in the bottom half of all starting QBs. Hurts has been the reason the Eagles won certain games and there are games they should’ve won but he didn’t come through. In the end you go into HoF based on production. Team success helps. Too early in his career to know if he will be a HoF QB but he has foundation. If he, and the Eagles, continue with their success he will have a HoF case IMM
 
ND, I really could careless if he makes the Hall of Fame or not. If he is considered for it that's great for him, but I just need him to be a solid quarterback, for now anyway. I don't think he's the kind of guy that can carry a team like he did in 2017. I think those days are gone because he just doesn't have those legs anymore.
 
That list is ridiculous. I would not take Dak over Jalen. There is something to be said for being a winner and coming up huge in big games.

Dak is the best at racking up garbage stats when the game is out of reach and the defense is in prevent.

Also, Jared Goff ? Are you kidding me ?
 
I'd take either one of them Pliny. They are both excellent quarterbacks and sois Jaylen. Goff racks of huge numbers and Dak is impossible to get down on the ground. I don't begrudge them, I just don't care. We've got a good one and I'm happy. None of them can carry a team, but you can win with them.
 
football is such a team game. It’s fun to rank and debate. For me it’s all about wins and losses. No matter how talented a QB is, success depends on coaching and the players and execution around them. Last year was a rough year for the offense. Nobody was great. I find the media funny when some of them have 1000 foot views and just assume the rough year was all on Jalen.

Honestly, I don’t think I have a problem with the rankings. If it’s stats and how it looks, it seems about right. But who cares? If your a Cowboys fan are you hanging your hat on Daks stats and off season rankings as some kind of pride? Or Chargers and Herbert?

Hurts is what he is. An average middle of the pack QB that only wants to win and is not driven by stats. And he has consistently won. As a fan I will take that any day!

Here is to the offense as a whole and Jalen using these ranking as motivation to improve from what was not a good year last year.

And on the list. Caleb getting way too much credit to be that high. No way he belongs there yet. 58% completion percentage and some comeback wins get him over Jalen and Others?

Bo Nix way too low. Why is he getting dissed so bad. If healthy he would have been in the Super Bowl and they could have won. (Though his coach is a douche)

Personally I need to see more from Drake Maye before we anoint him for 1 good year with a cupcake schedule and the defense carrying them against crap offenses in the playoffs.

Does anybody remember Joe Kapp who played with the Vikings when they had those great teams in the old days? He was a great one and looked like hell when he played with all those wounded ducks he threw but he racked up a bunch of wins!
 
Keep in mind, Sam Darnold just won a Super Bowl. He put up OK numbers and Seattle is his 5th team.

You don't need a great QB. You need a decent QB surrounded by a great team. So many of these QB salaries keep the team from improving the team elsewhere.

Look at that list of top 20 QB's. Only Mahomes (#2), Stafford (#3) in the top 10 have won Super Bowls.

Then you have Darnold (11) and Hurts (17). I would take Hurts also over Darnold any day.
 
Joe Gibbs won with three different quarterbacks in Baltimore Won a Super Bowl with that guy that's really not very good. I don't think Hertz can carry a team to a Super Bowl anymore but he sure proved he can win one. John Elway and Peyton Manning won Super Bowl's at the end of their careers when they can barely stand up. Them can just step on the field and their presence is felt and I think Jaylen Probably has that same feel with his team. Other than Brown I never heard anybody **** about him.

Dak is a playoff choker and Jalen is a playoff riser.

He's not perfect but he's singularly focused about winning. I'll take it all day long.
 
Interesting list... I'd redo it like this:

TIER 1
1) Josh Allen
2) Patrick Mahomes... he played the position as good as it can be played for a few years but I think he is on the decline
3) Matthew Stafford... I think we underestimate just how good he is. He's Troy Aikman.
TIER 2
4) Joe Burrow... if he could stay healthy he'd be Tier 1.
TIER 3
5) Lamar Jackson... only because he comes up small in big games
6) Justin Herbert... he is REALLY good IMO.
7) Jayden Daniels... if I could trade for one QB in the league I'd get him. He would fit our scheme so well
8) Caleb Williams... I think he is going to be Tier 1 before long
Tier 4
9) Bo Nix... I think he could be Tier 1 before long also
10) Drake Maye... just not sure yet if he is a game manager or on the path to being elite
11) Dak Prescott... stat sheet stuffer but not a winner
12) Jordan Love... He should be better
Tier 5
13) Jared Goff... plays like Tier 1 and then like shit the next game
14) Jalen Hurts... make or break year
15) Baker Mayfield... I'd love him on my team though. He's a gamer.
16) Sam Darnold
17) Trevor Lawrence... has all the tools but just can't put it together
18) Brock Purdy... cuz he can't stay healthy
19. CJ Stroud... something is way off with him
