I tend toward the libertarian side of life and rights and privacy. I did 26 years in the military and anyone who doesn't believe the military is rife with fraud, waste, and abuse isn't facing reality. We have lost control of the majority of our government and the military is just another part of that loss.
As for Apple---it is a slippery slope. That is the exact reason why the NRA fights gun control so hard. It is a slippery slope because once you give an inch there are those who will fight and fight and fight to get another inch and then another inch until they get what they want which is complete elimination of guns. The same can be said of those who fight smoking or alcohol or any other issue.
There is room for compromise. The FBI has said Apple can destroy the technology after they get into this phone. There is no reason to give the technology to the FBI when the FBI can just give the phone to Apple techs and they info can be accessed. I believe Apple has to be responsive to the court order.
They have an out though. Our country is built on the rule of law. If you believe that the order is illegal you can appeal it. Unfortunately this will take time to get through the courts. I'd rather not see that happen but that is the rule of law.
I will say one other thing. People like to say freedom isn't free like it is something that only applies to the military. It isn't. This is the price we pay for the right of privacy. The freedom to bear arms isn't free. Sometimes people are killed with guns. But that is the price we pay for that freedom. The freedom to use alcohol or smoke or whatever isn't free. Sometimes people are killed because of those. But that is the price we pay for that freedom. As long as my pursuit of happiness doesn't infringe on another it needs to be left alone. And when someone does infringe on another they need to be held accountable.
Now I suppose there is a reason for this to have been moved.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
    Hope is not a strategy
    RIP

There is too much information floating around on this right now. I heard that the FBI wants the software to crack the phone. I feel that Apple should not comply with that for all kinds of reasons and if that's the case this will be held up in court for years. Let's get some kind of compromise here, or are these two sides just going to go the way of the land and stay strictly polarized?

not sure what to think. Are we really to believe that the gov with all its resources can't hack a phone? Something just doesn't smell right about this I will agree.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

I don't think that if they could bust into the phone, they wold be pursuing this. Why?

Oh, and as a personal statement on this issue, I am not posting on my IPad this evening, instead I am using my Samsung Galaxy Tab S 2 that I just purchased. Take that, Apple!!! ( now I just have to figure out my way around this android stuff, LOL!)

I think they can get in; but I don't think they believe they can get in without exceeding the pass code limits and having the data erased. So they don't want to risk losing the data if they can get apple to remove some roadblocks

They can get in by physically altering the phone I've heard. I think Apple said they would do this for them but I'm not sure. I guess there's a way to take it apart with ultra precise lasers to get in and get what they need. Somehow they theoretically could destroy the shutdown feature that erases everything after ten unsuccessful tries and would enable the FBI to run millions of computer generated passwords and get in.

Just listening to head of FBI and they want to work with Apple about a plan. So now I'm thinking what about other phone makers? I'm guessing this whole thing isn't going anywhere, at least anytime soon.
